3M SMR ok to polish cc wheels before Zaino?

wifehatescar

My L5-S1 is killing me!
I have some like new condition factory cc wheels that have just some minor scratches. I want to polish the wheels (by hand) before I add some Zaino.

I have some 3M SMR left over, can I use that without it being too aggressive? I have some FCRC too but I assume it's too harsh.

I don't think I want to use Mothers cc wheel polish since it has protection of it's own, it would not work with Zaino

Think of wheel finishes like auto paint. If you can feel the scratches, it'll take a lot more than just SMR to remove them. Even Fine Cut may not touch them. The only way you'll know is by trying them.

Definitely try the SMR then wipe down with alcohol or a wax remover, then apply the Z.

Thanks for the note. I actually cannot feel most of them (they are quite light-you can only see them in good lighting) so I'll give the SMR a try, maybe the FCRC if the SMR does not work.

I just was a bit worried since most say wheel cc is very soft, not sure how aggressive I should be on really nice factory wheels with the cc in good shape with minor scratches. I suppose SMR is pretty non-aggressive though.

A few products to consider in the future for clearcoated wheel care are Clearkote's VM ( very mild abrasive and lays down a protective coat in 1 step) and P21S GEPC (S100 SEPC) ( follow with an alcohol wipe and Zaino away).

As Bret stated, treat your CC wheels with the same TLC and technique as your vehicle's paint. Just realize that a protectant will not last nearly as long as on the wheels as it does on the car's body finish.
