3M Imperial Hand Glaze---use everytime?

Should 3M IHG be used everytime you wax? I have a brand new car and it states in the manual to use wax only and to use polishes sparingly and infrequently (only when the shine dulls)....but I want a WET look to my final job but also I dont want to wear the paint down. Thank you.

The blurb on proper autocare says IHG should be applied frequently for the first 30days of your paint's life.

Not sure how useful this is odds are even your brand new car's paint is already 30+ days old and IHG is pretty hard to apply.

I use it once every 6-8 weeks(1 year old car), depending on if I want the car to look the best for one day or another. IHG has no abrasives just fillers so frequent application shouldn't be a problem.

When first using IHG, I found it difficult to buff and highly prone to smearing. The best way to prevent that is to use smaller amounts and work the product into your paint until the surface is almost clear and dry.

I find it difficult to remove.

Last time I used it I tried working it in more then before still though it was hard to remove, but I have been using either blitz or souveran so pretty much anything is hard compared to them.

I plan on getting a PC and just using the SMR with no IHG next year.

I will try using less of the product next time I use IHG though.

Red Wolf, I find that working it in till it's hardly visible makes it a bit easier, but compared to most of the other stuff used here, I agree......it's still a MAJOR PITA!

I only continue using it because I've got bottles and bottles of glaze and I don't want them to go to waste. I prefer using PPCL and P21S PCL prior to waxing as those are a breeze to work with, fill swirls just as well as a traditional glaze, and seem to leave a shinier, slicker surface than the glazes.

I love 3M IHG, my questions are: is it better to apply it with a damp or wet applicator and keep the applicator wet (because I find this makes the glaze spread more evenly, and I can get more out of less glaze).

And the second question is...can this be applied again say 3 weeks after I have waxed?? Or does it specifically have to go on only BEFORE wax?? I don't know if its ok to alternate layers like that. And finally, what would be the next "more aggressive" product after IHG?? My paint is smooth, but can be a little more swirl and/or scratch free...

Thanks...

I do not believe IHG has abrasives so I do not see how it could wear down paint other than your applicator rubbing for a long long time.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love IHG along with 3M Perfect-It Glaze and Swirl remover. Both for light and dark cars. But squirt a little out and rub between fingers. You will definitely feel some abrasive content. I have older vehicles that need more care to the paint surface so it's fabulous.

However on newer cars I'm inclined to use Pinnacle Paint Cleansing Lotion, or P21S Paint Cleansing Lotion. They seem to be milder. Shouldn't need the stronger treatment for a few years.

Blackcaraddict. Since IHG does have some abrasives I would not be inclined to use it between wax coats if the paint still has a rich appearance. You will remove the prior coat rather than putting a layer on top of the older one. If you do layer I recommend a week or 2 at least between layers to allow the prior layer to set completely.

If you have a rough surface a clay bar should be used BEFORE you glaze. It can add its own swirl marks. I use Glaze once or twice a year depending on how long it is outside, or its appearance. If the paint is washed out then I clay bar, glaze and wax. Waxes hold up better on well prepared surfaces.

IHG MSDS

It seems IHG has 1-5% ceramic materials and wares, chemicals......I presume this is the abrasive

It also has trade secret processed castor oil.....

Hmmmmmmmmm

But mainly it is water....I wonder the size of the abrasives?
