2020 Health & Fitness Thread

I eat maybe a little bit more than average on holidays but not like when I really indulge in my favorite meals which is quite seldom.

I`m trying to think of *any* meals where I eat a lot more/less than what I consider right...not coming up with much of anything. It`s just not as enjoyable for me, and hey...when it comes right down to it I consider myself a Hedonist; gotta *enjoy* myself or why bother...

; gotta *enjoy* myself or why bother...

Yep I really do enjoy those seldom favorite food meals. That’s when I don’t worry about any consequences.

I checked and TG’s meal didn’t result in any more pounds being put on. I walked this morning and will again on Monday and Tuesday so I ought to be in fine shape.

Bill D- Eh, it takes a *LOT* of excess calories to really make a diff, or at least it seems that way when I do the math. Even a few thousand extra really shouldn`t be any big deal as long as you don`t do it all the time. When I put on bodyfat during the Holidays, I was eating a *TON* of fattening foods for weeks on end, and even then it`s not like anybody else would notice those 3-5 lbs. (which would then take me a few months to burn off...no thanks, done with that).

I wonder what my dietary changes and different exercise frequency/volume will show on the scale, if anything. Dunno when I`ll get weighed since I`m postponing my Physical until the Pandemic is over. When they weighed me in during my Tick Bite Adventure it was just under the usual 165.

Accumulator- You don`t have a scale at home? I weigh myself all the time even if mine may not be as accurate as one in a doctor`s office

Sure, we have two of `em, both highly accurate, one being a Tanita that`s supposed to calc. bodyfat (does *NOT* work right for me, like...weirdly not right...for some reason but the lbs. are spot-on).

I just don`t care to the point of never weighing myself. Don`t *WANT* to care or, more accurately "want to *NOT* care" and won`t set myself up for any kind of self-imposed performance anxiety over it. For me, it`s 100% 1) how I feel, 2) how I perform, 3) how I look. As for "then how do you know how fit/lean/etc. you really are?", as long as I can see *at least* a 6-pack (I`d have to gain a lot of fat to be down to only seeing that!) I`m OK, as long as I see more than that and have visible vascularity on my lower torso/abs then I`m happy.

There are just too many variables involved in "bodyweight" for me to ascribe any significance to it *FOR ME*. Mine never varies more than a few lbs. anyhow, last big diff being back in the `90s when I discovered Creatine and went from 150-something to 160-something. THAT was obvious! Looked like I`d cycled steroids or somesuch. Since then it`s been such minute fine-tuning that nobody but my wife can ever notice anything.

Now get training! ;) As one ages, *without Resistance Training to ward off Sarcopenia*, a constant bodyweight indicates increased bodyfat. Always, it`s just how humans are. Muscle simply disappears after a certain age if you don`t train, so the natural progression in any untrained person *who`s not gaining fat* will be a drop in bodyweight. IF the lean weight decreases, but the overall weight stays the same, it`s because there`s more fat. I`d gladly wager the cost of some body composition testing on that one :D Do two tests a year apart, and the bodyfat will go up unless you`re exercising to preserve lean (muscle) weight. (y one`s mid-80s some muscle loss is simply inevitable, but it can be so minimal that it`s no big deal...IF the training/diet are right.) Heh heh, OK OK...end of lecture :o

I greatly reduced sugar if, for no other reason, to stop getting cavities. Now I find certain things just too sweet and I abstain from them.

re-tired and Bill D- Good on you guys for cutting out the sugar! Between that and watching the Glycemic Load (not just the Glycemic INDEX) of what you eat you can make some pretty significant improvements while still eating lots of good stuff.

True Confession though- I still have ~6oz. of Ocean Spray CranPom daily :o Mix my Creatine with it. NOT OPTIMAL by any means, but better than when I was taking a Creatine supplement that contained a whole lot more sugar than the fruit drink.

Re-tired- Gee, anybody who`s tried to lose weight/fat oughta be REALLY impressed with your results there; that`s a whole lotta (presumably the wrong kind) of weight to lose. And I`m very glad to hear that you were tracking it over a reasonable period of time, rather than expecting/seeking immediate results.

Felt like popping back here to encourage everyone to keep chasing those fitness goals.

Since my last visit at the beginning of COVID, lots of things have changed.
Struggled for 6months since last spring going from swimming/weights 4-5x a week to a terrible stretch of just basic body weight stuff "when I feel like it" + jump roping.. wasn`t cutting it.

Caved twice:
First, a set of adjustable dumbells and bench which tied me over for a few months. Then again for boxing day, splurged on a Rogue SML-2 squat stand, a way too expensive stainless barbell and set of bumpers and life is SO MUCH BETTER.

Back to eating what I want, lifting heavy again, back to healthy stress relief. Right back on track, LETSGOOOOOO

Until BMWWW posted, I`d been thinking that these threads get so little traction that I might as well just skip it. The way I`m so busy these days probably factored in though...

Everything is great here, incremental progress, *still* making that progress and not suffering any "age-related decline". A year of no Denny`s or other [crap] has been very beneficial, so overall the Pandemic has been wonderful for my health/fitness.

I`m just *so* busy these days that I`m not doing much here, but I didn`t want to just let this go:

BMWWW- That all sounds great! Gee, a *stainless* bar! What did you get?

Do the bumper plates totally eliminate any flooring issues? They sound nice (I never splurged on bumpers myself, but then I really only drop the dbs, not the bar).

And I agree *100%* about ".. keep chasing those fitness goals"! Just not quitting is worth a whole lot, and whatever keeps ya at it sounds good to me. Having equipment that you really like can make a huge diff all right.

OK, when I get some free time I think I *will* start a 2021 H&F thread :D I do wonder how jrock645 is doing... I know Bill D is keeping up with his walking, and/but I`m still trying to nudge him into some Resistance Training ;)

I got this year’s blood work results back and yep, similar to last year: slightly elevated cholesterol and glucose. This runs in the family so I’m not concerned. Im waiting for my doc’s comments when I go to see him next week.

Bill D- Hopefully your HDL is high too (if not, take more fish oil ;) ) and your LDL is the "soft fluffy" kind.

I myself am all about the HDL : Triglyceride ratio, [EDIT: too rushed! got the reatio reversed :o ]...I like to keep my HDL higher than my TGs.

I don`t have the report handy at the moment but IIRC my "good" cholesterol is at a healthy level. I`ll see what my doc says, if anything, on Friday
