Consumer Reports 2011 Car Wax Buying Guide

I think they did a nice job finally. Some of the things I liked:

-A wax isn't going to improve the shine of a new car (guessing they mean well polished and just OTC waxes, which I agree with).

-They stress proper washing and good media (though good means microfiber instead of old underwear)

-They warn of abrasive products dulling the finish

-They mention SWIRLS!

-They check trim friendliness of waxes

Overall, they crammed as much information as possible for the average Joe. I can't imagine cramming more information and hoping for it to sink in. After playing around with many of the OTC waxes they used, I mostly agree with the results. I would have loved to see some other choices (like DG and Collinite) but they were stressing easy to find.

Overall I say :clap2:

I agree, pretty decent report. I like CR overall, but certain 'specialty' products in the past only have received very generic, somewhat lightweight review criteria. They are definitely getting better.

Decent, would have thought they would've mentioned sealants at some point. Was surprised that they said the Meguiar's NXT 2.0 liquid is better than the paste, I've always found the opposite to be true.

I subscribe to online CR - I do not always agree 100% with their testing methodologies but for the most part they are inline. With regards to the wax test, I wish I knew more about the condition of the car before the tests (and other variables) but I consider their recommendations to be good for "non-Autopians" and non-enthusiasts. It's still a good start as personal experience should overwrite what a magazine tells you.

It would be nice if they spelled out their criteria somewhere, perhaps online as I'm sure they cant fill a magazine with it. The one thing I like about them is they don't seem bought yet... they do have favorite brands it seems but they seem to keep an open mind.

Kind of like Car & Driver with 3 series BMWs?

Washing a brand new car with ONR will increase the shine. Most waxes we use will add at least some gloss and/or depth to the finish even without polishing.
