I am gonna help a friend on Monday who needs some "touching up" on his car-- 10 year old car, non-clear coated, over a year since it was last washed. I planned on doing this (using my PC): Mother's Clay (not by PC!) 3M Perfect-it II rubbing compound (probably with a wool pad), 3M FI-II (foam cutting pad), Meguair's #9 2.0 (foam pad), Meguiar's #26 by hand (I have so much #26 lying around, so I have to use it. I use Klasse for my car, but since he's only gonna give me the money covering the supplies, I'm not using my good stuff).

His car looks pretty bad. VERY oxidized. Does this plan sound ok or too harsh? His car is a small little hatchback, so it won't take forever, just very long! Also, does anyone actually reccomend washing a beat up car with laundry detergent, or is that a myth?

Sounds like you're good to go. Make sure you have plenty of towels and applicator pads as I'll guess you'll go thru a bunch. It doesn't sound too harsh; the car's pretty well wasted so a little aggressive cleaning can only help. Besides, I'm sure your friend will be thrilled with the outcome. He ain't gonna notice if you used Klasse or not.

AS for laundry detergent, I don't see why someone would use it on a car. What's the point? There are usually bleaches and perfumes in laundry detergent which can leave a filmy residue on the car. If you've got to use something strong try the famous blue Dawn. That'll take care of almost anything. Beyond that you need Auto Int'ls ABC system.

Oh, and don't forget pics!!! Before and after.

Laundry detrgent was only recommended unde very EXTREME circumstances... 5/27/01

I do not think it is recommended unless you are ready to sell the car, and need a quick fix.

I was called in to restore the finish on this 2011 Aston Martin V12 Vantage in Quantum Silver.

This one was not as severly damaged as the Rapide but still needed some attention.
