2010 year of the Recall

I'm not sure how this slipped under the radar (yeah, actually, I have a good hunch how) but with the 250K announced today, GM has recalled over 3 million vehicles this year. Funny how the media dogpiles one manufacturer while another slips under the radar and then manages to hardly cover the facts that come out after the initial speculations showing how there most likely was no manufacturing defect or software problem but operator error.

250K - seat belts
1.5 million - heated washer fluid issue
160K - Hummer hood latch
1.3 million - faulty steering

That's just the ones I could find in that one article...

A lot of manufactures have had steering problems I don't think I want electronic steering.

My new focus has DBW and I wish it was the old throttle cable set up.
Instead of depending on the computer to close the throttle I prefer the old way of doing it.

The manufacture did not go to DBW because it is better they went to it because it is cheaper for them.
Much easier to make cruise control operate and no need for throttle cables.

Years ago I had a throttle stick on an 18 wheeler I just used my toe to pull it back.. Can't do that with dive by wire..

I agree that there is some areas where I prefer a good ole mechanical setup / linkage as opposed to putting it into the hands of a computer. Not only in the automotive world, either. While I am a big technology geek, I think we've become too reliant on computers that do everything for us. I think it's one reason why people my age can't spell, use proper grammar, or hold a conversation with a person while looking them in the eye instead of texting it (poor grammar and all) on the cell phone.

Jared, I swear I want to pummel you sometimes

I know you (and many others on this site it seems) are on a warpath against GM, but let's be real and put one thing into perspective here:

How many injuries or deaths have resulted from the issues GM has recalled vehicles for? Has GM covered up, delayed, or ignored any issues that come up and/or any indications that a previous fix has proven invalid? Didn't think so.

The reason so many vehicles were recalled for the heated washer fluid and steering issues is because they included some of GM's most popular models across its lineup including full size trucks and SUVs, luxury sedans, and economy cars that not only show up in the possession of private owners, but also commonly in fleets.

So before you're so quick to act as though GM is so much worse than any/every other manufacturer out there, you have to examine how they handle issues when they do arise and also look at the comparative severity of those issues as they relate to other manufacturers' problems.

Now, go put your tin foil hat back on, Mr. Conspiracy Theorist, before Barack Obama personally steals your brain waves and assimilates you into the Borg Collective :gotcha:

No conspiracy theory. Just pointing out the facts that GM recalls don't get the media attention that Toyota recalls have. And you can research some of the NHTSA findings regarding the Toyota accelerator recalls showing that a lot of the instances show where someone was depressing the gas pedal and that the brake was untouched. By no means am I trying to say I give them a pass, but if you think GM (or anyone else) doesn't try to hold-off on recalls, sweep information under the rug, or perform some sort of "should we recall" formula before they do one, you're naive.

Also, while I didn't vote for him, I respect President Obama and realize that he has done a fairly decent job given all the circumstances he's been faced with. That pretty much makes me a Socialist sympathizer here in Alabama.

As much as you might not believe it, I'm not completely anti-GM. I really (really) dislike them for their business choices in the past couple of years and the fact that they were "rewarded" for poor business practices and allowed a "free pass." I'm entitled to that opinion, especially since I'm an unwilling shareholder and all. :) I can understand your strong feelings of support for GM, as I recall you said you had some family who worked there or you worked there yourself and you live right there in Michigan (where I think they produce a few Silverados still). While I do respect your opinion, I don't have to agree with it and I do understand that we have completely different views on how the business should be run.

In short - I'd like to see GM do what Ford has done over the past couple of years. I think it would benefit us all.

The media seems to be much worse these days in the tabloid journalism. The worst part is that people are watching or listening to the crap enough to keep them on the air. They often zero in on someone (celebrity, etc) or some company.
