My RX300 seems to quickly accumulate dust particles all over the instrument panels.

Recently, I saw a 2 pack ionizer set that plugs into your cig lighter.

Anyone have any thoughts as to whether this will help improve the cabin air quality or with the dust particles?

maybe dk or someone else can help me on this one

the best product would electrostatically filter out the dust, which is sometimes mislabled as an ionizer, but not all ionizers are electrostatic filters.

if you have to clean it regularly then it does work

it it's just there, then it lets out a charge that charges the air that passes through it, with hopes that air being charged will keep dust from clinging to the dash. hmmm, it sounds like a streach to me. Ionized air/dust still needs to go somewhere and it depends on the charge of the dash. As for deionizers they do the exact same, again it just depends on the charge of your dash, if it even carries one.

okay maybe that didn't answer that question at all, i'm just thinking out loud.

I thought an ionizer was just like an air freshener or something. I thought it did something to the atoms of the odor to neutralize it. maybe I am thinking of the wrong thing but if that is what an ionizer is then it won't have anything to do with dust in your car. If you leave you windows down in a dust storm then there isn't anything that will keep your car clean inside. I know that I can reduce a lot of my dust inside if I just use a non greasy dash protectant and wipe it off with a lint free cloth. Static is the greatest cause of dash dust I believe.

Hi guys:

Steve -- your theory is correct. Ionizers <em class='bbc'>can[/i] and often do result in cleaner <em class='bbc'>air[/i] . They accomplish this in the following manner:

An ion, as I think you know, is a particle that has a "charge." It is either positively or negatively charged. An "ionizer" creates charged particles (usually by exposing them to high voltage, which changes the number of electrons in the particles, resulting in an imbalance between electrons and protons, which then results in the particle have a net charge -- the electrons have a negative charge and the protons have a positive charge. When their numbers are even, there is no net charge. When they are imbalanced, you have a charged particle).

A charged particle is attracted to things that have the opposite charge ("opposites attract," like the positive and negative poles on two magnets). So, particles that have been ionized -- that have had their electron/proton balance upset and now have a net charge -- are attracted to and stick to things -- like walls, desks, etc. The air becomes cleaner. And, surfaces in the area become dirtier!

You guessed right, if you have to clean the device, its working because its trapping particles. If the device is not getting dirty, then something else is!

An electrostatic filter first puts a charge on the particles in the air blowing through the electrostatic filter. Then, the air passes over plates in the filter that have the <em class='bbc'>opposite[/i] charge. Zap! The particles are attracted to the plates. You then clean the plates every few days or weeks.

I think a car ionizer <em class='bbc'>could[/i] result in dirtier surfaces in a car.

Jngrbrdman's intuition is correct. Ions, being imbalances, are "hungry" and "want" to combine with other things, to attempt to correct their charge imbalance. This makes them reactive . . . they react with other things. This can change -- destroy - the other things. Those other things might be molecules in the air that have unpleasant odors (unpleasant odors often come from organic substances, which often readily react with ions).

Probably more than anyone wanted to know! :p

Thanks, though I tried to leave out the "I could never explain this to you" aspect of some the posts (no personal slam intended -- Ron is well intentioned).

My belief is that 1. a writer should try to make his writing understandable. 2. If you really understand something, you should be able to explain it to a child. If I cannot really explain something to you, maybe it is not because you are dull, maybe its because I do not understand it throughly myself. If I did throughly understand it, I should be able to explain it!

Subjects tend to be complex to those learning them . . . and simple once mastered. Take car maintainance. When you first start out, it can be confusing. Once you understand the principles and the practices, you suddenly can more easily explain it to others.

We can all understand most everything, if it is presented in a simple and logical manner, in "building blocks" of knowledge. I think we only start to believe we cannot understand when some %$##@* tries to overwhelm us with complexity, throwing unexplained terms at us or launching off at too high a level(usually to try to show how smart they are).

Very well said darbh. Not only was your information spot on, your method of presenting it was admirable. Very intelligent writing while still retaining the clarity required for the reader to comprehend it.

Might I inquire as to what your profession is?

hey let's not rip on the guy when he's not even in the country ;) (too bad I'm sorta in agreement, answer the question then expand all you want as advanced as you want)

and puterbum, may answer was correct too, just not as indepth :p haha j/k

lol Steve, I was more referring to darbh's last post. I wasn't really even referring to the topic of the thread. I thought darbh had some great points and thank him for sharing them.:D

Wow! Great feedback everyone. I'll keep using my Cal mini duster. Too bad, it seemed like a great idea for the car. Glad I didn't waste my money. I'll spend it on some 303 instead :)

Thanks, all, for the acknowledgement. I appreciate it.

puterbum -- to answer your question: I often have trouble with this question, though my parole officer says I am doing OK, particularly given the nature of the prior offences -- neither of which I actually committed. I was set up by the LAPD (just for the record, this was an attempt at self-directed humor).

Actually, I do have a problem answering the question, I guess because my firm does a lot of things. Mostly, we are business advisors -- plans, strategies, financing, etc. I also help people set up business relationships (figure out how to work together for their mutual benefit). The fancy term for this is assisting in "the establishment of strategic relationships."

Most of the time, I am also conducting one or two mediations, usually in the evening -- trying to help people come to agreements and resolve problems or conflicts without going to court.

The one hundred dollar phrase (which is actually the official term for what my firm does) is "Boutique Investment Banking" which is about the worse term I could ever think of, as the job has nothing to do with either boutiques or banking, and often has nothing to do with investments! So, when you ask what I do, I should answer, "I run a boutique investment banking firm." But, I never say that because the listener would be more confused than before they asked the question! But, dat be what I is, cap'n!

LOL That job title sounds like you work for people interested in investing money in flower shops or something. LOL I know you probably make more money at it than I do at my job but at least people understand me when I tell them that I am a trainer for Sprint PCS. They get that. Boutique Investment Banking isn't quite as clear cut as that. But hey, you work where they pay you. :)

Jngrbrdman -- LOL -- never gotten involved in a flower shop business, though I guess it could be blooming successful. (yes, pathetic attempt at humor)

Yes, much easier to say you are a trainer.

Someday I will be able to say that I own a detail shop and here is my card. I can't wait for that day...

I hope your business is all roses and blossoms like your wit. :D
