2003 Mercedes SL 500 (Extremely Large Pictures)

Well, all, we had a sunny, cold and windy day here in New Orleans, and I got a chance to complete the job on my SL 500. It lives outside, so I try to stay on top of keeping it neat. I've been anxious to get into the wheel wells and finally got a scissor jack that was low enough (under four inches). The plan was to pull each wheel and clean them front and back and in the meantime scrub and dress the wheel wells.

These pictures are huge. You can see the entire gallery on my site. That might be to your advantage, as you can view thumbnails first. http://www.bollar.org/2003sl500.htm

The car's a year old and I've never taken the wheels off, so they looked pretty rough:

But they did clear up pretty easily. Each wheel took about an hour. Each wheel got a Z7 bath, Z18 clay, Z2 w/ZFX. Tires got Z16.

Wheel wells were scrubbed with a tire brush and Z7. I had lots of leftover Eagle One Wet Tire Shine, so they got a huge dose of that:

And putting it all together:

The car itself was pretty clean, but I gave it a quick Z7, Z6 and freshened the leather with Z10.

all I can say is resize those. You can get just as good of an impression at smaller resolution. Its a PITA to scroll across. And even on Cable it takes awhile for it to load. I fear for 56k

What was your procedure for taking off and cleaning each wheel? I am looking to do the process also and would like some detailed explanation and some pointers to make it as painless as possible.

Yeah, I figured you guys would say that. I have smaller pictures uploading as we speak.

Until a 42 inch monitor is common, please resize. :) Those wheels are almost actual size.

JM19 - When I've removed my wheels in the past, I had to do like bollar did and do one wheel at a time b/c my car is too low to get more than one wheel off the ground at a time without special equipment. In this case, I do the wheels at the end instead of the beginning. Once they're off, clean them like you normally do with your favorite cleaner and brushes. Then I'll put good protectant inside the wheel and also on the inside of the tire. Then do up the outside as you normally would and remount. I don't find this necessary often as I can reach most of the visible parts of my wheels from the outside of the wheel.

This isn't too difficult. All you need is a jack and a torque wrench. You could use the jack in the car, but I find that a scissor jack makes lifting the car easier. IMO, the torque wrench is a requirement -- you don't want the lug nuts too tight or too loose! It makes the job so much easier.

Anyway, I jacked the car up and removed the wheel in the normal way. Then I rinsed off most of the brake dust and went after the wheel with a soft wheel brush. Most everything came off with the brush. I went over some stubborn stains with a sheepskin mitt. Finally some clay got most of the remaining goop off the wheels.

Tires were scrubbed with a tire brush on both sides. Nothing special.

Bollar,

Great pics and the SL is one of the Benz cars I like. The new SLs with the McLaren front are real popular in the suburb I live in.

Do you have the Ceramiclear paint on that SL? I've heard good things about it.

Thanks!

The new SLKs have the McLaren front end and I do think it's cool. However, I hope they don't change the nose on the SL for a few more years -- I'm not in the mood to upgrade! ;)

This car does have the ceramic paint. It does seem to be pretty durable. I have a couple of scratches, but no swirls that I can see -- but I'm pretty careful and the only washing it gets is from me by hand. A friend of mine also has an SL and he's the kind of guy who would clean the car with ScotchBrite :shocked if I didn't remove it and all the other car cleaning crap from his house....and I can say that his paint also looks pretty good.

That looks great!!!

What's on the paint though?

You should send those pics to Sal Zaino...I'm sure he'd appreciate them for his site.

nice

live in lakeview?

No, I live in Uptown, but it's hard to get any sun. I thought the lake would make a nice background for the pictures, but the water was so rough there weren't any boats out.

Once I got under the car and figured out how to clean that chrome up, I was disappointed to find that it only went back a few inches! ;)
