2001 Acura NSX detailed; some paint failure.

Hey everyone. I did another NSX yesterday and overall the condition of the car was good for it's age. Moderate swirls, some light scratches on the horizontal panels and hood; surprisingly few stone chips. I was able to get all the swirling and most of the deeper marring (some of it remained on the decklid, you'll see it). However on both rear pillars where was weirdness going on. It looks to me like paint failure (tried AIO on it, definitely not oxidation). Just seems odd since it's in the *exact* same spot on both sides, and that's the only spot on the car that exhibited that. Anyway, here we go. Sun never came out, so I used my off camera flash to show defects; pics are sort of uninspiring because of it. :/

Process:

Opt Hyper/orange on hood, rear decklid, roof via rotary @1500 rpm.

Menzerna IP/orange via PC, entire car.

Menzerna FPII/white via PC

Menzerna FMJ

Clearkote Carnauba

PB's NL on trim, Nevr Dull on exhuast, Megs insane shine on tires.

Interior was straightforward except the seats. Vacuum, wet/dry mats and carpets, wipedown everything else. I let Leatherique Rejuv Oil sit on the seats for 5 hours while I cleaned the car; it made a huge difference, they were really feeiling dry and fragile before. Much better now. Awesome stuff for those who haven't tried it.

You can see what I think is the paint failure here, on the pillar, small dot. Other side is the same, just larger. Thoughts? Repaint?

The sun peeked out, then took off behind the house :/

Who says clay doesn't do anything?

After, hood.

Decklid - some marring remained, like little pock-marks almost.

I've come to really enjoy looking at your threads! Outstanding work. That red is just awesome. How bad were the exhaust tips before polishing?

Awesome...as always!

Thanks. I should have taken pics - they were pretty gummy. I think NSX's run kind of rich (Simon might be able to shed some light on that), because they always seem to have exhaust residue on the lower bumper and the tips seem to get pretty sooty. Nevr Dull is super easy to use though, I really like it.

atta boy !

:thx What a time-saver it is. Cuts literally hours off each job.

picus - they mostly do but with aftermarket exhausts its even worse, then combine that with the stock diffuser it makes for a difficult cleaning :-(

and btw - I shelved my dewalt 849 permanently. I really prefer the makita's weight, the quieter sound and overall feel. Both rotaries i find gave completely different "feels" to them and I've even used them with the exact same "side handle".. Makita 9227 is king in my arsenal.

Those are awsome shots! the back quarter panel shots are money! those spots are weird maybe a bolt under there gets hot or something? I want to do a car like that, I need a break from the boreing cars(that take too much work) for a bit..... Very nice work!

2nd on the makita.

Ya, I love the Makita, then again it's the only one I've ever used. It seems very comfortable in my hands and is easy to control, so that's that.

Not sure about the bolt thing; not a bad guess. I wondered if maybe that was a popular spot to rub against; it totally looks like paint failure (circular, rings moving outward in varying levels of haziness). I tried AIO and it didn't do a thing. I didn't want to polish over them in case I might expose primer.

That is a 1991 or 1992 based on the roof color, wheels and center console (the best I can tell). More info here.

I can't see the spots on the pillars but based on the age, it could be a repaint or repair.

I didn't have that on my 91 but it rarely saw the sun.

The red has a tinted clear that you may have seen on your pads from polishing.

That is the also the stock exhaust. How many miles are on the car?

I think it's a 91' not an 01'...

Whoops! Yes, '91. Typo :)

Yep, definitely '91. It was a typo. Here is a closer look at the "spot". The owner is not aware of a repaint, and yes my pads always get tinted on NSX's.

I believe he said there was close to 50k km on the car, but don't quote me.

It's sort of like semi-concentric rings that get less and less faded, almost as if someone's been slowly rubbing off the paint over the years. Just weird that it's in the exact same spot on both sides.

Thanks everyone.

Does the NSX red only have tinted clear or does all paint colors on NSX's have tinted clear?

I believe the 97+ Spa Yellow color is also a tri-coat/tri-stage paint. I have heard the yellow is difficult to match. It is stunning in person.

Not sure about the others.

Picus - due to the age and the neglect you've done all you can with that area. There's nothing other than a special kind of "re-painting" that can be done. Try wetsanding ?

Ya, I think I am going to leave it alone. The owner is aware of it; and I polished as close as I felt comfortable to it. It doesn't seem to be too big an eyesore right now, so he can have it repainted whenever he sees fit. He may need a little leather work too; the leatherique is pretty amazing stuff, but he has some cracks in the drivers seat that will need to be repaired.

RE: Other NSX colors; I believe the black has a tinted clear as well, at least that's what I've read (I haven't confirmed). And yes, spa yellow is an amazing color.
