I prefer water-based as it cleans up easier. But I don't have *strong* feelings either way and I wouldn't choose/not a product based on that alone.
2. Exterior trim dressing with silicone in it good or bad?
I a) don't use exterior dressings much and/but, b) don't consider silicone to be hideously, categorically awful either so it's another case where I really don't care either way. I'd try to keep silicone-based products off the paint though, some such stuff can be hard to (really) clean off.
*IMO* people make a huge deal out of issues like these for reasons that have little to do with the underlying realities. I think "marketing" myself...
The whole silicone thing imo is nothing most of us should have to worry about. Silicone is a problem if your going to be painting the car, but even than, you should be taking steps to properly prepare it.
If your not planning on painting you car in the future than I wouldnt worry about the silicone thing. BTW, which trim dressings dont contain silicone?
The only thing I think you should worry about is whether a solvent based dressing will dry out rubber seals. Im sure accumulator knows a thing or two about this as I have no idea.
I personally dont use solvent based dressings due to their greasy nature. I hate the extra muck they pick up

Actually, I hardly ever do much of anything for seals, and given the way my vehicles are pampered it doesn't matter. When I do use something, it's usually a rubber-care product from Wurth or 1Z. Yeah, I'd use something that's not messy; some people here use grease/etc. and there's no way I'd want that getting on clothes/etc.
I prefer the water based polishes, they are easier to remove IMO
