1st time rotary observations

Well got my mak today so I gave it a shot on my test hood. the hood is metalic green. its a ford hood. I washed and clayed it yesterday. My Backing plate is a flexible eurothane 6" BP. The results were as follows

Optimum via LC 7.5" VC polishing pad @1250 rpm. - no burns or holograms. This was my first time and I was impressed.

Optimum via LC 6" finishing pad @ 1250 - nice holograms lol haha. I removed them with opt and polishing pad @1250.

SSR1 via LC 7.5" VC polishing pad @ 1250 rpm. - even nicer (worse) holograms.

I have only spent about an hour practicing but so far i have had great luck with the optimum and the polishing pad.

Any suggestions?

Greg

i havent found a method to not produce holograms. only way ive been dealing with them is to follow with pc. kinda annoying. whats even worse is that the holograms arent even noticeable until sunluight. not even my 1000w worklights show them.

Optimum (OP) has become my "go to" polish. It is the absolute best rotary polish I have found. One trick I have found while working with OP is to use a little pressure on the first pass and then lighten the pressure to machine wt. on the second. I did this yesterday on my black SUV and it turned out hologram free! I also used the green Sonus pad @ 1500 rpm.

Oh yeah, one more thing. You don;t have to move the rotary as fast as you think. If you are like me, you thought the rotary had to be mving across the panel at a pretty fast rate. Once I slowed the rotary down to "a little faster than PC speed", everything came out great!

JJ thanks for the tips. New update:

Opt via white LC VC 7.5" polishing pad @1250 swirl free and hologram free

followed by

PwC via Black 8" Finishing pad @1250 swirl free and hologram free

I actually removed swirls with PwC. I was suprised to see that. One other question for opt users. Does your opt bottle suck like mine. I have to give it absolute hell to get any polish out. I have tried pocking it with a pin and nothing. I have to be shaking while squeezing to just get drops out. Anyone else have this?

Also. If I am getting hologram free paint and such ( I will check at sunset and in other lighting conditions too, would I be crazy to use a rotary on a full detail tommarow? clients car?

Thanks

Greg

Greg,

Are you doing the alcohol spritz test to clean the paint before you are inspecting for holograms or swirls?

fuzz: I havnt done that yet. But i figured since optimum isnt supposed to contain any fillers then I would be ok. I will try that though. So is it:

Isoprophyl Alcohal 50:50 water or just straight?

Yes, 50/50 works just fine. This is the true test to see is anything is left behind.

The bottle of OP I used yesterday didn't have any problems. I would suggest buying some smaller bottles and transfering the polish into those. I use 2 and 4 oz bottles exclusively for all my polishes. This helps me to monitor the amount of polish I'm using and allows me to carry the polish in my pocket. I found the best deal on bottles could be found HERE

Update: Im preetty good at this haha. the panel was boring me so I did part of my car. IM heading to the gas station in a little bit to check under there lights. I plan on using the rotary on a cleints car tomarow. Im pretty confident with it.

A bit of advice greg, I wouldn't go using it on a customers car yet. Having only a days worth of experince. I would practice on your car or bit more.

You won't be able to help yourself tomorrow, but you really should at the very least do your entire car first. It's not that the rotary is that hard to use, it's the fact that it can burn you in an instant (pun intended). I will be doing a clients car for the first time tomorrow too, but I waited until I completed my families and my cars first (5 full details). That doesn't make me a pro, just a little more experienced and confident.

yea i wouldnt use it on another car before you have done some more practicing. you dont want to burn through another persons paint. especially if you have to pay out of pocket for any damage done to the car if you burn throgh.

i still burn boats every once in awhile and ive been using the rotary for over 2 years on 200 boats.

I have to bump the last few posts. I would wait a bit before trying your rotary on a clients car. I too thought I had hologram free paint my first week back at a rotary and got into the sunlight and BAM, there they were! I have since fixed my problems but it took a few good hours of practice. Like you are doing, several lighting conditions are best to really make sure you're not leaving any surprises behind!

well went to the gas station and it looked clean but im not claiming Im a pro here by any means. I hope its not seeming that. And good news. I went for a little cruise on the way home and saw someone sitting at the local car hangout. well they saw my car and then booked a full detail for next week. Then another person pulled up and then another and they all want details haha. Good thing I stopped haha. Ok a little off topic. Well it seems the majority is saying dont use the rotary tommarow. Sean seemed ok with it and the woob too. I will do some thinking.
