1998 Ferrari 355 GTS...

I never had to worry about detailing before, my cars were beyond help; but now I have a new I30 and the wife has ordered me to get the dealer "emblem" off the trunk lid. It just looks like a plastic plate glued to the trunk lid. Is this a simple task or do I have to worry about ruining the paint underneath the emblem ?

Someone mentioned using a blow dryer to heat the emblem up and it would just "fall off"; I wasn't so sure...besides, I trashed my blow dryer back in '76...

Please forgive my ignorance, as I truly am a rookie...

thanks...

welcome aboard!

well im not sure how the emblems r like for infinite, but since it is a japanese brand, i would think its similar to how honda/acura has their emblems on.

chances r it is not only stuck there by some kind of glue. there will be pegs sticking out of the plastic emblem that fits into premade whole in the metal of your cars body. so if u do remove it, u will have 2-4 holes there instead. you can have it shaved and painted to get a clean look to it, but i dunno if u want to do that to a new car.

as for basically removing glueish stuff from the paint, blow drier may work but it isnt as effective as using Goo Gone or some similar product that removes glue form surfaces. im sure others have more opinions too

I personally would take it back and make them remove it.

It was not on the original bill of sale was it?

There is a little known law in most states that requires for any item added to the vehicle that is not on the window sticker, must be listed on the bill of sale.

Now, granted, this is not a big deal, but like your wife, why pay for a vehicle and then drive it around providing free advertising for the dealer!

Other than that, take some lighter fluid and squirt it on the top part so the fluid, (naptha is all it is) can seep down and loosen the glue. Do this a couple of times and then take a hair dryer and heat it. (make sure most of the naptha has evaporated or you could look like one of those funky "light the car on fire and see how great this miracle product protects your paint" deals.)

Use a none metal item, like a spatula, with a thin edge and carefully work it loose. If it starts but doesn't come off easily, repeat soaking and then heating.

Once it is off, use the naptha to remove the glue residue, a little polish and you are done.

I'm not sure how your emblem is attached, but I know my G20's was not secured by any fasteners, only a glue.

As to its removal, I have heard a lot of people say dental floss is a good thing to use for removal of emblems. This would be used to gently remove it after you have treated it as Ron K. suggested.

Good luck!

The best way to remove it is to take a piece of fishing line and CUT the badge off the car. It will slice right through the glue. Then use some goo-gone, WD40, or a mild abrasive to get rid of the rest of the glue.

Ahhh I'm so fortunate to live in Vegas... my Civic emblem from my last car fell off from the heat. :D

I removed the other one with some dental floss... very very carefully.

every time I detail someone's car I etch YoSteve.Com right into the clearcoat!!! how's that for advertising :D

The make super strong detal floss, should you choose to use it (I wonder if they rate it like fishing line :), but mint might scare away the fish ).

haha, "I trashed my blow dryer back in '76...", well that's the year I was born and used mine right through the 80's ;)

Not only can you look like that car trick, you can look like that muslim guy who caught on fire after burning a flag.
