16 Hours on an 08 BMW?

Looks like he did very thorough work. Interior, Engine, paint correction, sealant. How long do you think it should have taken?

I did a similar process on my own car and it took me about the same length of time, and wasn't nearly as good.
 
I don't really see anything wrong with the time he put into it. If you haven't seen the shape new cars make it to the customer in, I think you'd be surprised. Flat out dirty, marring, wetsanding marks, getting the packing crap off everything... there's lots to do.

I spent a couple weeks getting my new truck where I thought it should be.
 
Pefection takes time. Considering all that was done, and to the degree it was done, I don't see the time frame as out of line.

The car had 7k miles on it according to the thread. Hardly new. Looking at the mud on the lower panels, I'd say if it had been seeing that kind of driving for 7k miles, it was going to need some serious work.

Also, every panel appeared to need corrective work. Two passes of SIP, a finishing polish, and a sealant on every panel is gonna take some time to do right.

In half that time and still produced the same results.

I think its in his process organization based on how he answered my inquiry.

I just finished a JB Jag with water spots from hell, out side car 24 / 7 big four door jobbie.

It took me about 8 hours and the finish was very good..

Again its hard to tell the condition of the cars paint from pics but I just don't see 16 hours of work
 
From previous new car details I have done I can see it taking him that long. He was working at a relaxed pace probably.
 
This was also posted on Autopia and not one person complained about the time it took. My guess is that Dave works faster and has his process down better. I have seen Dave's write-ups and he does outstanding work.

Clearly you don't know the background of TSC17.

He is the number 1 detailer in the Mid-West Region, and on the Top 10 List of Detailers in the US.

His prices arn't based off of hours, but what they want done to their car, and how much they want removed, what they want cleaned...........etc

All of his cars he does is a extremely great job at attention to detail, he makes sure everything is perfection.

That is what makes him the top detailer in Mid-West Ohio.......

And because of that, he can get customers for Pennsylvania, and keep on getting them returning (Like the Merci he has right now).

I don't see a problem on how long it takes, he removes the swirls and gets every car finish I see literally perfect
 
I met up with this guy while on my road trip. He's on AcuraZine which I am also a member of due to my dad's RL. This guy is an absolute fanatic and I know he's on Autopia as well as AZine. The thing is, AZine kept deleting his threads as 'advertisements' until he finally explained to the Admin that he wasn't advertising anything and that I, like many, look forward to those write-ups.

Really nice guy....he's given me a lot of tips for when I move up to a Makita Rotary.

Well, not to sound like a fool, but just where are you pulling these rankings from? I mean, is there some kind of detailer ranking website or magazine or something?
 
I would suggest looking into Todd's work, it is amazing. He usually takes his work over a couple of days, breaking it up into sections. He really enjoys spending time with his family, and also does not need to rush things, for this is a side job for him. He just has a very accute attention to detail, and wants what leaves his garage to be perfect, so he usually takes his time. I have however seen him turn around a much older car in half the time that looked amazing. To each is own for how long it might take. Hell it took me 12 hours to correct the Subaru I did...
 
so after reading the thread on the Bimmer site, did Todds explanation of what took so long to you make sense?? Have you always been fast at your process or did it take time to refine it..sorry I just have a spot in my heart for that guy, he has helped me tremendously over the last year and a half.
 
A good outside detail on my own vehicle (jb) takes me at least 12-16 hours.
But I'm old, fat, and lazy. As well as no where near as experienced or confident as most here.

When we got my son's car the I told the dealer not to touch it ex take the plastic off, take the inside plastic and stickers off. Wash windows. When we got it home it took 3 of us 6 + hours the first day to get it done. SO that's at least 18 man hours. Then we completed it the next day.

If you read everything what I wrote on that BMW thread, you would see that I was very impressed with his work and documentation...he even responded to that with thanks.

What I questioned was how long and he even explained that.

All that said I am sure that he is a top end detailer, and from the looks has a very loyal following...given 16 hours on a car I would have the exhaust pipe cleaned and sealed.

We are all into detailing for various reasons. For me its a passion for excellence, my loyal customer base tells me that.

As for detailing rankings in the US..I didn't get an invite to the competition so how can he compare as one of the top when I wasn't invited to show my work:rofl

Those competitions are paid advertisements for chemical manufactures IMO...they get there detailers to come in and use there stuff so they car brag about who uses their line.

Dose that make them great? I don't know.

Again This guy Todd is one very anal serious detailer...very impressive, but its not me to send 16 hours on a 08 car that really didn't look that bad to start
