15 Minutes with a PC

After receiving my PC and Pads (Thanks zenhog!)... finally get some time to sit down and experiment... here's a pic of my driver's side rear door (untouched as of this pic... and the whole car is like this)

Before.jpg

And here's a pic of my driver's side front door after 15 minutes with a PC, a wool pad, PI-III, white pad, PI-III MG...

Fantastic comparison shot! This has been my year of getting to know swirls and learning how to eliminate them (rather than fear them, use underpowered abrasives, and hide them under glaze). Not easy, but such an important skill.

If this was a class, you just got an A+ :)

Thanks guys :D

I do have to admit though... there are some dings I haven't gotten out yet... not so sure about that A+ ;)

About the same place... zoomed out a bit, and a little sharper...

oh yeah... and one "DOH!!"... I forgot to tape up the keyhole... (it used to be black)

I'll try to get some shots up when I finish the whole thing... working in pieces as it's hard to find free time lately

Looks just like my last Grand Cherokee (the before pic that is). I've had alot of trouble with both Jeeps, the paint seems to be very tough. Even the yellow pad and FI-2 can't remove all the scratches. Looks like the wool pad worked well though, I'll have to try that.

I've still had a few trouble spots on the fenders and some on the hood... even with the wool pad... they don't even look like they are that deep, but they also don't even seem to be affected by the wool pad and PI-III... I'm gonna try to get some extra cut after I finish the car with what I've got. If I figure out any secrets I'll let you know ;)

What color were your Jeeps?

When you just say PI-III, are you referring to PI-III SMR? You said you used PI-III MG, so I'm just curious. What did you think of the MG?

Sorry... when I say PI-III I was referring to PI-III Rubbing Compound... and PI-III MG referring to the Machine Glaze.

The MG is great at finishing it up, although as many have said, can be a bit hard to work with. It tends to leave a residue if you let it dry. I've put too much on a few times and tried to work over too large an area... it dries and is a pain to get off. Usually I'll just put a little more on and go over the spot that dried and it comes right up, so it's more of a pain.

Some people have had issues with hazing, although mostly on dark colors. I can see it a little on mine, but for the most part I am able to avoid it. Again, I've been able to remove my hazing by going over it again, just on a smaller area.

approval from Scottwax! :bow :bow :bow (I'm always in awe of your pics... something for me to shoot for)

:D

qwik... a 7424...

the "15 minutes" is about the amount of time it took to do the spot in the picture... the whole vehicle is taking quite awhile

mlebarron,

Nice work, you will have post more pics once you done.

what kind of wool pad was it? where did u get it from?

Top the line sells a LC 7.5" wool pad. CMA sell a 6" wool pad.

TOL

CMA

I do not know which wool pad mlebarron used.

Eric

Wow Michael... what a great before and after. Now tell me.. how the HECK did you get that thing so scratched up with all those swirl marks??!! That's sure not branch scratches from 4-wheeling through the woods?

I think I only sent you one wool pad.. its that thin one that comes with the PC as standard equipment when you order from coastal tool..

You're doing great grasshopper.. continue to polish.. lol

Yeah, Zenhog only sent me the one wool pad... so Diggs... you're answer would be it's the wool pad that comes with it :)

no, they're not branch scratches. My hunch is they're from the craftsman 10" "buffer" you can buy at sears... the one with the nice "soft" lambswool cover to add shine (I didn't buy this vehicle new, and I know the previous owner had one)

grasshopper learn much... but not like when day job keeps him too late to do work on car

mlebarron - do you mind sharing your procedure? My gf's car has just about as many swirls (white 95 dodge neon) as your door has.

I just got my pc today and bought a cheap white pad from home depot and through some SMR on it and it helped and looked good but NOTHING like your results. I just wanted to play with it. I needed to clay her hood BAD because it had tons of tree sap, hell some of it still wont' come out with clay i need something stronger!

Anyway - i see you used 3M Perfect-it III compound, is that applied by hand, (buff off) than apply the Machine Glaze after that? Or are both applied with the pc?

Also how does 3M compare to Menzerna? I was thinking of using that on her car - which is more abrasive? Not sure if you have any expierence with menzeran but hoping maybe someone else will chime in on that one. Thanks!
