10 year old Trans-Am detail

A friend at work is selling their Trans Am and wanted to get it shined up before people come to check it out. This car used the baby of the family, but for some reason they let it go to pot. He bought a 300M and I guess this just wasn't as exciting anymore. I was looking forward to the challenge. :naughty

The back half was totally covered in hard water stains. This spoiler shot is a good example of what the entire right rear side looked like.

I washed with NXT, clayed with Four Star clay, and then gave it an ABC treatment. The ABC was necessary to deal with a lot of the IFO that was still left even after claying. I wasn't sure if it would be needed or not, so I washed and clayed it first before I broke out the big guns.

Once I got through the crap that was on the paint, that was when the swirls really showed up. I love it how people can call a car their 'baby' and yet they still don't know how to care for the paint.

I polished it out with SSR2 with a yellow Detail City pad to start with. There was some hazing left over, so I switched to SSR1 with a white DetailCity pad to clear that up. It worked out really well. I probably should have started with 2.5 to really get a good cut on the swirls. This still got out most of what I was concerned with, so it was good for me. I advised the owner that I could probably spend 5 hours polishing the paint, but he probably didn't want to pay me for that. He told me to do as good as I could for what he was willing to pay. I only charged him $120 for the exterior, so I figured spending three or four hours on the paint was good value for his money.

Here are the pictures of before the SSR2, after SSR2, and then after SSR1.

The fender was a little more forgiving with the SSR2 and didn't haze as bad. Here it is before and after the SSR2. I didn't take an after shot when I did the SSR1, but just imagine that haze being gone and you'll know what it looked like.

Here is the crusty spoiler after I got the crust off.

I also detailed the engine for good measure. I hate popping the hood of a car that I am interested in buying and seeing a mess. I threw this in with the hopes that this job would bring in some referrals. Guys with cars like this have friends with cars like this. ;)

I applied the Wolfgang pre-cleaner and the Wolfgang Sealant to finish it off with. The hard water stains are all gone and most of the swirling is also gone. It looks a hundred times better than the heap they brought to me and they were really happy with the results. I wish I could have spent more time on it to get rid of all the paint imperfections, but sometimes all you can do is all you can do.

I have used PB's SSR1 and SSR2.5. Both great polishes. The 2.5 is nice that
it breaks down into a fine and doe's not haze as bad as SSR2 from the pics
you show. I just bought a bottle of the Meguiars #83 DACP. I was running
out of the SSR2.5. I wanted to get something local to start working on my
truck. My paint is in very good shape, The SSR1 did not do much for the
swirls. I needed something with more bite and know this was one that you
could use with a PC. I used some Meguiars #4 Heavy Cut with a PC on
another car and found out it was rotary only. No wonder it did not work
out the problems. How do you think the #83 compares to the SSR2?

I would have to compare them side by side. One thing I do notice is that I don't get the hazing with DACP that I get with SSR2. However, I don't have to work SSR2 as long as DACP to get the same results. I guess the time it takes with SSR1 to clean up the haze sort of negates any time savings, but I usually follow up DACP with something lighter just to make sure the paint is clear.

Jngrbrdman,

Did you dress the engine bay with CD-2 (per your engine regimen)?

I'm still fighting with the spray head and laying down an even coat. Any tips?

The engine bay looks amazing -as always. You have that process nailed! I love seeing your work in this area.

It didn't take much CD2 on that engine. I sprayed it down last night and then buffed it down and used Spray and Wipe on the painted surfaces this morning. It shined up nice. :)

As hard as this stuff is getting to find. I would have thought you would only use it on your cars. That is , unless you were getting paid good for it.

My Accord and Pilot engine bays are pretty well sealed and don't get very dusty. The 6 cans I have would last me a hundred years if I only reserved it for myself. :) I charge about $30 for an engine detail, so I don't mind using a little of my CD2 on one. When it runs out then I'll just fall back on something else. Bold N Bright seems to work pretty well. It's not as fast as using a spray, but it does leave a great looking shine.

I've been using Valugard products for a few years now. Some of their stuff is very very good. Some of it I don't use because I prefer other brands, but products like their ABC system are hard to find an equal of. It is worth having even if you only need to use it once in a great while.

I'm sure the owner was pleased with his exterior ,you do great work on all your engine bays which is the icing on the cake. The swirls looked bad i wouldn't have thought they could have cleaned up so good ,but thats why your the OCD. Nice work Anthony..

What else do you find really good? I hear their Odor Eliminator has no equal. ABC System would be good for trashed vehicles!

Odor Eliminator is great. The Trim and Molding Renewer is one of my favorites as well. They have some great new car prep products that gets the adhesive from the transportation sheets off. Their one step paint cleaner is pretty much on par with AIO. They have some awesome paint polishes too. Some are really agressive, but they get the job done. I would definitely suggest the use of a paint gauge with some of them. From what I've been told, some of their compounds will take 1 mill of clear off with every pass. You really can't go wrong with their products. If you need to restore screwed up paint then they have what you want. If you want appearance enhancing products, then there are other places I would shop for that. Valugard sealant and carnauba has nothing on Pinnacle or Wolfgang.
