07' Roush Stage 3 Mustang

A friend of mine works for a local Ford dealership that is certified to sell Roush vehicles and asked me to perform a complete detail on this Mustang before the new owner took ownership.

The car is brand new, but it had a significant amout of decontamination on the paint from sitting out in the lot without any protection for months. There were some water spots on the silver stripes, which are vinyl and had some very minor acid rain damage on the top surfaces. The soon to be owner requested that the car to be sent to a professional detailer to be properly detailed before he took it home.

My process was:

Wash, clean wheels and tires

Cleaned engine compartment

Clayed with Kar Kraft clay bar

Compounded top surfaces with Optimum Hyper Compound using a yellow foam cutting pad

Buffed complete exterior with 106ff using a black foam finishing pad

Alcohol wipedown

Werkstatt's Prime by hand

ZFX'd Z2 Pro X 2

Z8 Wipedown

Werkstatt's Prime on wheels, followed by Opti-Seal

Opti-Seal on all exterior glass

Super Blue dressing on tires and wheel wells

Scotchguarded all interior carpets and floor mats

Meguiars Quick Interior Detail on all vinyl and leather

That thing is sweet!!!! I like the color combo.Did you put anything on the top? Any engine pictures?? Looks great!!! Great job!! Joe

Thomas- Thanks!

Joe- I did use a protectant on the convertible top, but I forget what the products is called. I bought it from my local Kar Kraft distributor. I switched to Raggtopp protectant because they discontinued the product. Sorry, I don't have any engine pictures. I just found one of my memory sticks with a few older details on it. I think that some of the pictures were deleted.

Bryan- Yes, the owner was very pleased. I left a business card in the glove compartment and the owner called me about a month later. He is a local private contractor and has a few really nice cars he wants me to detail for him. He said he was blown away when he went to pick the car up.

Ryan- Thanks! The car was pretty nice.

I had fun last weekend detailing the LR-3 with you!

I have a few details next week if you want to get together

Awesome job Rick. How cool is it to be a new car owner and getting a new car detailed by you and not some dealership hack. I am sure he was estatic...

Thanks guys!

I couldn't imagine what the car would have looked like if the dealers "detailer" got his hands on it!

The new style Mustangs are pretty nice.... Still no Corvette though! ;)

Nice car and work. I use to do warranty paint work for 5-6 Ford dealerships back in Michigan and I'd have to say that Mustangs are the worst for acid rain. I don't think I've ever seen a dark colored one that didn't have it! Very rarely was I able to remove the etching with just compounding (even with a wool pad). I'm glad your process worked for you. You need to have the Service Department put an acid rain claim into to Ford to get your services re-imbursed.

Awesome job Rick, i saw a white one two weeks ago on the road and it just few by me. Now that's a true new car delivery for a new owner........:bow

Danase- I have noticed the same thing. There aren't too many convertibles around. I think that most people that buy a performance car such as this, would prefer a coupe for the added stability and handling. My Z06 is a fixed roof car and when I drive a coupe (targa top) or a convertible there is noticeable difference in stability.

MartinD- Thanks!

David- I worked at a Ford dealership for a short while and noticed there was a significant amount of vehicles with acid rain damage. What do you normally charge Ford for this? Luckily this particular car was not too bad. it had been sitting in the showroom for a little while, which helped a bit.

ZoomZoom- Thanks! I think if I was going to buy one, I would buy white. One of my friends has a 97' white Cobra Saleen with white wheels. It's a really sharp looking car.

Back then (4 years ago) they would pay $200-$300 without any questions. Think about inflation? Plus, it's alot cheaper than a repaint. You'd have to paint 2/3 rds of the car in alot of cases. Good luck.

Thanks for the info David. I'm sure you saved Ford a lot of money!

This detail was performed a few months back, so it's too late to put in any kind of claim for it. I will definitely keep it in mind for the next car I get with acid rain damage from a dealer.

I remember when I had my detail shop I used to do new car preps for a Porsche/Audi dealership. I think just about every single Audi had acid rain damage and lots of contaminants on the paint. Amazing how trashed a new car can get so quickly.
