04' F150 Pinnacle Souveran, Oh my!

Well here's the results from today's detail. It's my father's 2004 F150, which has a little over 8,000 miles on it. I had some pretty bad scratches on both sides of the bed, and around the door handles. Not to mention the swirls were getting pretty bad too from neglect.

Process:

Wash and Clay

1ZPP with cutting pad (only on bad spots like the bed and front of hood)

1ZPP with polishing pad over the whole truck

AIO (x2 on hood) with polishing pad

Souveran x1 for now, I plan on putting another coat on it next weekend.

AIO on the wheels, chrome, and glass

Zep Protect-All 50/50 with water on tires

Enjoy!

LOL, thanks guys. This thing kicked my butt. I actually planned on doing this truck and my Expedition but the truck took the whole day. I started around 10am and didn't finish until about 4pm. Granted, once the midday sun was out I slowed down quite a bit. You sure don't realize how big these trucks are until you have to polish them!

Wow, I'd say that he just like to watch you work your tail off! :D I used to have an 03' F250 (you can check it out in my gallery) and it was only a regular bed, no top and that sucker used to take more than 2 hours just to wash, let alone actually detail it!

After looking at the truck in the sun today (one day later), I noticed some buffing marks or holograms, if you will so I will be repolishing the truck next weekend with some 1ZMP. I hate to lose a coat of Souveran out of this, but its not perfect and I'm a perfectionist. I actually wanted to make a pass with MP but I ran out of pads since I sent my LC pads in to be swapped out for new ones.

How do you guys recommend removing the wax that's on there now so I can polish? Should I run AIO over it and just start from there? I've never worked backwards like this, so this is a new avenue for me.

This really sucks. I was kind of apprehensive to do the detail from the beginning without some finishing pads, but I figured I would just give it a try anyway. It's funny how these blemishes can be lurking on your paint even though it looks SO good! Oh well, no big deal. This will just be a good excuse to spend this weekend detailing again!

in my short experience detailing, I like using P21S paintwork cleansing lotion to remove wax, does an excellent job I think

No SG between the AIO and Souveran?? I'm going to Klasse and Souveran my black Mustang an would be curious as to why you didn't SG...

sweet detail, i love the new F-150s. and they are huge trucks, i had one as a rental and it was a chore just to wash it, there's so much real estate to cover! :D

to repolish, i just start polishing without removing the wax....:o

Thanks for the replies. I have some Sonus Paintwork Cleanser on the way, so I will just use that since it's comparable to the P21S cleaner.

T. Perrine,

No SG because I hate SG. I use it for wheeld duty, and my beater car (which you can see lurking in the background of the reflections). SG is just to hard to deal with in high humidity climates, which I am in. I love the durability of it, but its too hard to work with, and it streaks really bad here. If I use a sealant/wax I use 1Z Glanz Wax, which I very well may do next weekend when I redo this truck.

If it looks this good already, prepare to be blown away once you get out the last bit of swirls. I had to do the same thing over some very minor scuffing and a few minor cobwebbing issues I had missed last time. Not very fun initially going through Souveran x 2 and Natty's x 1 with DACP. Worked out in the end though but the initial loss of paint clarity hurt!

I imagine once you get the paint the way you want, you will be a very happy camper!

Yup I agree! Great job :xyxthumbs

Oh and I give you credit for taking on an F-150, those are pretty big trucks. I just recently helped my friend do a dualie and it took almost the whole day.

Aloha,

Ron

Don't get me wrong guys, the truck looks 99% there, I'm just not happy with the faint buffer scuffs left behind. All of the swirls are completely gone, so I think I may just go over it with MP/polishing pad and then MP/finishing pad to make sure it's ridiculously smooth :D

Well congrats again on the good job Jason and thanks for the SG info... I'm in Houston so I hear ya about the humidity. I guess I'm back on the fence about using my SG between the AIO and Souveran... I have it all here but I've never tried it. If I do try the SG, it will be VERY sparingly. Hopefully with fall on the way I can apply it on a not as humid day - but who knows after hearing your first hand experience.

I wasn't trying to scare you away from SG or anything, I was just sharing my personal experience with it. You never know, you might not have any problems with it at all and may like it as much as I like 1ZGW. I say try it out and see how it works for you. Just remember to apply VERY little product, that's the biggest mistake most people make with SG and that's also why so many people layer it. By layering, you can apply a very light film for each layer thus making it a lot easier to work with and after a couple layers, you have a nice thick base.

I've come to the conclusion that the marks left behind aren't buffer marks, but more like towel marks. I am thinking that using WW towels was okay while the towels were new but now that they aren't so new anymore I think they are leaving a "streaking" effect behind. I just ordered a whole bunch of plush mf towels from various vendors and will see which one works the best.
