01 540i vs. my new Metabo

My neighbour picked up an 01 540i (loaded) 50K on the meter, priced in the mid twenties. The car was just turned in and the dealer hadn’t prepped it.

The 540 is an amazing car -very solid feel and top notch fit and finish! It was (still is on some panels) full of deep scratches and swirls from years of tunnel washes. When I washed it, I placed my hand in a baggy and the flats felt like sandpaper.

I didn’t get the car until 8pm on Saturday. Nice. That said, there are no before pics, but I did take it out for a test drive, which was a lot of fun J

This detail was a free-bee, so I used a little bit of everything on it. I also wanted some seat time with my new Metabo rotary. I plan to spend some more time with this car over the weekend, because I'm far from happy with the finish.

Process:

Wash: Gliptone

Clay: Optimum (almost ½ a bar). The flats / bumper tops felt like 500 grit sandpaper.

Wheels: The wheels were completely caked with brake dust. Full strength S&R helped, but it was very labor intensive. I had to break out the wheel acid, which cleaned them swiftly. I didn’t have a mask on hand for the acid, and I’m paying the price. I had to deal with sore eyes and swollen sinus for about 3 days. I’m DONE with acid, period. It’s just not worth it IMO.

Wells: Optimum APC cut 50/50 (they were a mess). Optimum APC is a very good cleaner. (tires, wheels, interior carpet, trim, etc..). It works well on most anything except glass.

Paint: Dark Blue Metallic (I believe it’s call Orient Blue).

Compound: Power Gloss & cutting pad @2000 RPM x 2 on the hood and trunk. I’m not done yet, but in the interest of time, I had to move on. I think this beast is going to need a wool pad on the hood, trunk and roof. Years of neglect have taken their toll. I let my neighbor (he’s a PC only guy) run the Metabo on the trunk. I gave him a brief overview, laid down a bead and primed it for him (to avoid shooting sling all over the place), and let him take over. He did very well with it, especially considering that he’s never used a rotary before. The metabo is a very balanced, forgiving machine. I wanted to run my dewalt on the flats to compare both machines, but this car was taking longer than anticipated and I didn’t want to greet the sun from my garage on Sunday morning.

Next up…. Time for a cocktail. This was setting up to be a LONG night.

Polish: I started with Intensive Polish, then Optimum Compound/Polish mix, various cutting pads, etc.. , but nothing seemed to have enough cut (unusual). I horsed around for over an hour trying to find the ‘right’ combo. BMW paint is HARD! I finally moved to SSR 2.5 @ 1500 on a polishing pad. I normally don’t have luck with SSR’s, but on this night it worked like a charm! Go figure. I’d laid a bead about a foot long (pencil thick) and SSR2.5 broke down FAST, wiped off easy, 0 dusting, and produced a very clear looking finish. SSR2.5 improved all panels after a pass, but there are still imperfections (scratches) that need to be levelled. For the most part, the swirls are gone.

Final Polish: Meg’s #80. Yea, I wanted to hide what I didn’t get too J

Seal: Eagle One Nano Wax.

Jams/Wheels/Tires/wells: OCW on the jams & rims and Optimum for the tires and wells.

APC mix for a quick interior wipe down and vac.

The car and cleanup were completed by 3:00am, and I had to be up on Sunday by 8am. Ouch!

Here are a few afters taken the next morning. They really didn’t turn out that well, and my da*& batteries died after a few shots!

Nice work! The 540's are a sweet ride, the newer 545i's are even sweeter though. My friends mom has an 04, that thing hauls serious @$$ and handles like a dream!

This one is a work in progress. Several years of abuse have taken their toll on the finish. I think it's going to take a solid day to bring back the finish.

I like the newer 545's too, but I would take the old body style in a heart beat. It's a VERY sweet ride.

It's sad people can let a nice car like that go to waste. I know it's not like it's a rar car, but if you're going to spend $50,000+ on a new car you should at least take care of it!

99% would be more than happy with that finish!

Can I add a couple things :)?

-Use a bug scrubber on the wheels...Helps a TON for me, plus wheel clearcoat is always harder than the paint. No marring to date when used as per instructions.

-Overspray clay. The BMW I did a couple days ago was among some of the worst IFO I've done. If the car was white, it would appear a puky orange color. Even with latex gloves on (extra sensitive to texture...don't let your mind run away here ), it took about 5-6 swipes with Meguiar's Aggressive and it was all gone!

-Powergloss, LC Cutting Pad @ 1750 rpm. Nail this x 2 and work til its almost gone and you've removed 95% of swirls. I've never got anything less even on Audi's. Finish up with FPII or PO85RD @ 1500rpm on the LC black and nothing but flawless!

Hope this helps you out...Like me, I know you are always looking for new products/techniques to try out.

Be well!

I really appreciate the useful tips and advice. Saying 'nice job' makes you feel good, but getting tips helps you improve your process.

Only tip I have: Take good care of your helper. :)

I concur with the BMW paint being ridiculously hard. A little outrageous for alot of the Euro Cars.

Maybe I heard wrong, but I think I know the answer to the hard paint question...

My boss said Mercedes-Benz and BMW use a ceramic type clear, that way it really reduces the amount of marring and spider webbing in the clear coat. He said he detailed an 04 SL500, the owner drove it daily, yet there was not one bit of spider webbing or marring on the finish. Maybe the owner was just excessivly picky about keeping the car clean, or maybe the Germans are using a ceramic clear? :dontgetit

Great work , NIce car . I do like the new and old body styles . For me as long as its in good condition, the right paint color, and has angel eyes I'm a believer..

Th erims really came out nice. Get some sealant on it when you get a chance .

Hawaiianelement: Thanks!

I used to live in O'ahu about 15 minutes from Hanauma Bay. Man do I miss that weather! You are a lucky man.

Excellent work mate
Never done a BMW so can't give any tips on refinishing them
1750-2000 rpm, seems too fast for me but maybe you need that kind of speed to get through the Beemer paint and as far as rotary work goes, I would call myself a semi pro and am certainly not at the calibre of anthony orosco or scottwax , that's for sure

I did some pre show prep work on my car the other night
Removed some swirls and light marring from the front bumper, bonnet and rear bumper but used different products

Menz PO85RD 3.01 with edge green, Menz PO85RD w/ edge blue
VM w/ edge blue and RMG with edge white
Rear bumper - SSR 2 w/ 3M black foam SSR 1 w/ separate 3M black
VM and RMG again
Great result, absolutely no swirls or scratches
Bonnet - sonus sfx 2 and 3 (Version 1) dried too fast and was a PITA to remove so changed to dinitrol 7020 and VM
600-1200 rpm at all times
Even the unpainted black side mirror backings got a PO85RD work out and VM
Not a scratch and probably the most reflective side mirrors on a falcon
