Do you always clay before you polish?

I can't say "always". But about 90% of the time I do. I'll do the sandwich bag test, and, for most vehicles, it's bumpy. The other 10% are usually by customers who don't want their cars clayed because of some horror story they've heard about someone dropping the clay on the driveway and...

    Jets 'n' Vettes...

Today we went to the Annual "Wings Over Whiteman" Airshow/Carshow at Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Missouri. Of the 200 cars, around 150 were Corvettes, hence the name I gave this thread! It was limited to the first 200 cars to pre-register... each car, driver, passenger had to be...

Do you prefer "No-Rinse" over Conventional Car Wash?

I find my self using No-rinse car wash products because they are so quick and easy!!!! No hose, no mess, no waste of water, no water spots... BUT! There's nothing quite like a nice super-sudsy car wash to know your car is really clean!:D Which do you prefer?;)

    Headlight Lens Polishing...

I'm about to give this a shot on my son's 2001 Grand Am. They are slightly pitted, but mostly hazed and starting to yellow. I have a precedure in mind but I'd like some information from those who have done this with success. I'd like to use my PC for this if possible. What are your products...

Buying in Bulk vs. Smaller sizes.....

Most of us have our favorite products that we use over and over on our own cars and customer cars. It just makes more sense to buy in bulk if that much product is being used. What are your favorite products to buy in bulk? I like Poorboys Bold 'n' Bright Tire dressing by the gallon. Also...

    Lost weight since retiring!

I worked for a large engineering/construction company for 32 years and retired in March 2009. Even though I was on the construction side of the house, most of my time was spent in the office. The field work that I did involved inspection and quality assurance, not physical labor. Since...

    What's your favorite METAL POLISH?

I used Mother's Aluminum Polish for years (Red Jar) and always had good success, then I switched to Mother's "Billet" Aluminum Polish, which had more cut and produced even better results. About 3 years ago, I was talking to a guy who drove Harleys. He told me the best metal polish to use was...

Luster Detailed: '67 Vette Vert! 427/400 Marina Blue (x2)!

This was a paint correction only on a '67 Corvette convertible, 427/400hp, 100% correct numbers matching, Marina blue, Marina blue, FACTORY AIR, and the rarest of all options for this car..... POWERGLIDE. Very rare car indeed. The car was painted and polished in 1988. Never polished since...

Visual Check of the vehicle, PRIOR to detailing!

I've made it a practice to walk around the car just to check for damage before I start the detail. Sometimes it's hard to see any chips, scratches, scrapes, dings, etc. when the car is dirty. But it's important to point out any of those areas before you start working on a customer car. Why...

    Sealant, Wax or Both.....

I'm interested to know how many of you put wax over your sealant and why. I've been using sealants for about the past 10 years and I never use wax over it because I just never saw the need. The sealants I use are so shiny and slick, that I really think it's a waste of time, effort and money...

Post a picture of your engine bay!

I think keeping the engine bay clean is just as important as the rest of the car!!!:cornut: Once it's clean, it doesn't take much effort to keep it that way. I usually do mine once a month. Post some pictures!!! Grand Prix GTP: Trans Am WS6: Corvette L83:

    Paint Thickness Guage...

Paint Thickness Gauge... I need to get one. (Sorry, mis-spelled "gauge" in the title! haha...) Whatever information you have would be helpful. 1. How does it work? 2. Is it measuring clearcoat depth, or base/clear or base/clear/primer? 3. Will it work on non-metallic cars? (fiberglas...

    Left Lane Bandits!!!!!

I'm not an aggressive driver. But I do appreciate having a nice clear left lane if I want to pass a slower vehicle. A "Left-Lane-Bandit" steals the left lane by driving slower than the right-lane traffic, causing anyone who wants to pass, to "weave" in and out of traffic! Very irritating. It...

Mixing ONR/Water to use as QD...

Is anyone using ONR/Water as a detailer? I'm kind of a detail spray junkie. There are so many that I like, it's hard to decide which one I like the best. I really use Z6 more than any other QD, primarily because it CLEANS and it's SLICK. Based on that criteria, will ONR, mixed up as a detail...

Buying New Tires? Take this precaution...

I learned this tip from a guy who had a mechanic ruin 2 of his nice custom rims on his Escalade, by being careless with the pneumatic wrench when removing the lug nuts. Chipped the chome plating off in SEVERAL places. (Most of these guys don't care about your car... all they want is their...

    Painter's Tape....

For anyone who uses a rotary or a powerful DA, such as the Flex, taping the areas where the vehicle has a "sharp" edge is essential. The paint is much thinner in those areas, and it's easy to make a mistake that you cant fix. Depending on the vehicle, I also like to tape the plastic headlight...

What kind of vacuum do you use?

I have 4 vacuum cleaners for the cars I detail. 1. Craftsman Shop Vac For the really big stuff. Dried mud, sand, gravel, etc. 2. Dirt Devil Upright with tools Surprisingly, this is the vac I seem to use the most for "normal" carpet, floormat and upholstery vacuuming. Great suction with...

    BFWD on the Daily Driver.....

I keep my DD in pretty good shape. Usually I polish it once a year and apply sealant to the paint 3-4 times per year. This is an application of BF Wet Diamond - 1 coat. Claybar with Meg's Quik Clay. Apply Wet Diamond by hand with supplied yellow pad. Wipe with Chem Guys Fluffer Microfiber...

    A Couple Coats of Sealant.....

I had a car show today, so I added 2 coats of Z5P. It didn't need polish, just wanted to add some depth and wetness. Z5P (x2) + Z8 (x1).---------------
