Washing Micro-Fiber Towels

Can I just wash my MF towels like my normal laundry and not have a problem when using them on my paint?

I heard that when u wash them it leaves a residue in the towels and can scratch the paint.

Thanks

Where have you been?

My MF towels get machine washed with liquid detergent and machine dried. No bleach or fabric softeners. Lots of uses, lots of washings, no problems. You do need to be careful what you wash with them. They will pick up any lint that comes off other laundry. I usually wash mine alone.

My MF's are never really dirty since they are only used for wax or sealant removal and QD'ing.

Same here, same process, be careful not to dry them on high because I think it can harm the polyester fibers. Anyone know anything about this?

Good point. While I don't actually know, it makes sense. We don't dry anything in our drier on the high setting. My wife thinks the high heat is bad for most fabrics, so she doesn't use it for any.

I was mine seperately from all other fabrics using liquid detergent. I wonder if I should be using Dawn for the mf's used to apply and/or wipe off wax??

My foam applicators, I hand wash in a Dawn solution. It has been said that Dawn in a washing machine is bad news. Never tried it, probably won't.
My MF towels aren't used to apply wax, just remove it. There doesn't seem to be a problem in getting them clean. If there is any wax or sealant residue left in the towel, it doesn't seem to be noticable when I use them again.
If you use one for applying product, I think I would hand wash it in a Dawn solution.

My recommendations are...,
1) Wash seperately.
2) Do not use fabric softener.
3) Do not bleach.
4) Do not use high heat if using the dryer(try to remove before completely dry..., they dry MUCH faster than cotton). I prefer to hang dry my towels and not use the dryer.
5) Do not use dryer sheets.
6) Do not iron.
7) Try to keep window and waxing towels seperate if possible.
8) Blue Dawn is the detergent of choice for washing, as there is no softeners or fragrances and works as a wax/polish stripper.
9) Dry seperate from other laundry.
10) Wash seperate from other laundry.

It may sound complicated, but it isn't. It just gives the BEST results using MF towels...

Do you use Dawn in the washing machine?
What I remember reading was someone using Dawn in their washer and having suds all over the place.

LOL!!!
They used WAY too much:)
Dawn is all I wash my towels, bonnets and pads in.
Although, I do sometimes use purple cleaner on the pads to help clean them by hand, but ALWAYS final wash with dawn.
It does not take much Dawn to make suds.
Just make sure to use the blue...

A good liquid detergent and high washing temperature (80ºC) will clean all wax or sealant from the MF. This is how I wash mine.

jgv,
The problem with a "good liquid detergent" is a LOT of them have fabric softeners, hydrocloric acid and/or perfumes..., ALL of which can harm MF towels. They clog up the fibers and they do not perform 100% of can cause smearing, etc.
IMO, it is best to "play it safe".
I sell towels and those are the instructions I give to my customers for BEST performance. Anything less and you are not getting the full potential of the towel in terms of cleaning ablity and such...
just my .02

Funny but I checked out half a dozen MSD sheets for popular liquid laundry soaps and none of em specified 'Hydrochloric Acid' as an ingredient.

A litle scaremongering perhaps ?

I've got a coupla dozen MFs and they seem perfectly happy with a good wash in liquid laundry soap and a tumble dry on 'medium'.

I tumble them on their own as they love to attract all the lint from my big drying towels (better than leaving all that lint on the car i guess)

As for ironing MFs ... damn even my best pants dont get ironed!!!!

LOL!!! -'Hydrochloric Acid'-
I meant to say sodium hypochlorite or any fabric brighteners, etc...,
Too many chemicals on my mind:)
Remember, you are not washing a "towel", you are washing "plastic"...
