Oven cleaner

GOT PREP?
So yesterday I am in this detail shop, one of the better ones in town. They are using oven cleaner sprayed onto a rag to clean plastic pebble textured moldings. The stuff worked like a charm, the car was a black volvo that it looked like someone had smeared nufinish on every molding. They were careful not to get any on the paint and followed up stoners trim shine, it looked brand new. Has anyone ever heard of this? This would scare me to use on peoples cars had I not sen it done. I wonder what would happen if you got any on the paint:confused:

Oven cleaner was quite often used to remove painted on signs from commercial vehicles at one time. I don't know if it still is or not. We used it on an old van we bought and it worked great. No ill effects that we ever saw.

Ovens are painted:rolleyes:

To answer the question, you would need to follow the vehicle for a few weeks or a month to see what it looks like after the Stoners wears off....some people still believe peanut butter will permanently do it too...lol...

see if there's anyway you can track the car for us ;)

WOAH!
Oven cleaner is made of lye! That crap is very corrosive. To start with, it will strip plasticizers out of the plastic and ditto to any dyes. I too am curious as to the long term follow up on this.

I remeber when we cleaned the BBQ and it took off all the paint on the outer edge's and made it a wierd yellow/pink color.

Are you saying that peanut butter does something bad to trim? I used PB on my trim over a month ago to remove wax and I've had no ill effects from it yet. It removed the wax perfectly. I don't believe it made it any cleaner but it worked. My car sits outside in direct sun and I haven't seen any effects yet.
Please explain what you mean about the Peanut Butter, PB :D

Thanks

Josh

mmm peanut buttery gooooodness

Im glad you had good results with it. My neighbors allready think im crazy with my car, I cannot imagine their reaction if I used peanut butter, mmmmm *drool*.

no the peanut butter doesn't do anything bad to the trim...it's just the oils that give back the shine....it's not a permanent fix, but if maintained and dressed after doing the work it can stay nice looking.
There are many different ways to achieve the same results with out using pb..and never chuncky;)

I'm with frozen and Poorboy. 303 will clean and leave UV protection. Black again cleans has a polymer and works like any other polymer sealant. Poorboys trim restorer works well too I hear. I assume some similar mechanism.
PB will not only leave oils, but the proteins in it have surfactant activity and I have seen people clean everything from shoes to car trim with it. Not the most efficient method to get the job done and I personally think it's a pain to clean up.

I am not saying its the best method, but it does work, and it is rather straight forward. Also sure is a good way to manage to talk my mom (or in most cases for you guys, wife) into having PB in thouse. Otherwise its a health nono.

Tass-
PB isn't a health no no! Shame on you for saying that..
:p

All things except cyanide and carbon monoxide are healthy in moderation.
