    Glass coatings?

I`ve been wondering about glass coatings... I know things range from glass sealant to to other hydrophobic products like rainX... I only have experience with rainX and was wondering if I should continue using rainX or should I try a different product?

Also, is rainX safe to use on glass that may have had previous glass coatings of a different product?

I use DP glass coating and its lasted 8-9 months and still going strong. Very impressed with it. RainX can`t compete with that.

    Re: Glass coatings?

I would want to get the glass completely free of anything before I applied any glass coating product on it...

Rain-X has something like denatured alcohol in it already, so it should be pretty good on already cleaned glass..

Not sure why one would apply another glass coating over a previous coating - unless the coatings are the same and you are renewing the coating..

If it is possible to get the glass really clean, it will be really smooth to the touch, and that alone will allow it to shed water.

I think once the glass pores get full of gunk, it does not repel water as easily.

The newer glass coatings mentioned above would be a great place to start if you are looking to really improve from what Rain-X is doing..

I have always had great success first cleaning and then using a glass polish on all the glass to further clean and get it really smooth..

If you can do this with a Random Orbital, a smaller pad - 3-4", and a good polish, you are going to have some beautifully clear glass that is going to repel a lot of dust, smaller flying things, and water really well !

And if you lived where I just lived, you really want the water repellency..

I`ve had very good results using CeriGlass: Glass Polish & Cleaner and their Glass Rayon Polishing Pad - 5" to clean the glass before applying FlyBy30 Windshield and Glass Coating. ( like 2 coats)

I can also speak out for DP GLASS COAT. Outstanding product. Very long term glass protection.

I agree. I thin, Black Label nudges it out a bit in terms of use and durability.

I have used Opti-Glass on a few cars including my daily driver. I applied it April 2013 and I can still see water beading really well

    Re: Glass coatings?

I applied PBL glass coating around a month ago on my 2014 Mercedes E350. It has a panoramic roof, everything but the outer edges of the roof are glass. I was able to get some rain shots yesterday, really really tight beads. So far so good.

A shot from the inside through the panoramic roof:

Most of the water rolls off any surface that has an angle.

    Re: Glass coatings?

I really liked how well aquapel works but you can only usually get a windshield out of it and its done. I also coated my windows with Gtechniq G1 and it works really well and last a long time. But I have been using Gtechniq G5 now and It seems to bead and sheet off water just as good as G1 just its durability is not as good. I got a good 5 months from my G5 before i noticed any degrading from it. I like G5 better because you can get a much larger bottle for almost same price as the 15ml G1 so that gives you multiple applications on the car and multiple car and the ability to do all the windows on the car as the 1
