    Waxes and more Waxes!

With the huge quantity of waxes out there, its really hard to choose which one! The intent for waxes is to enhance protection on top of sealants, and to make my car look the best that she can! She is a daily driver, so unfortunately she will be taking a lot of abuse, road-grime wise.

In general I`m looking for either one, or two. I have invested in a few of the Blackfire products and I`d prefer to stay within the family to ensure things work well together! I don`t have issues with going out of the family though, if the functional capacity of the works!

The idea is to have the car protected year round with AFPP/Poly/Crystal seal as the base level sealants. Full refresh every 6 months of AFPP in spring/fall, and top offs with poly spray/CS during the summer months. The waxes will be the additional layer on top, to help with overall protection and mainly function as a winter coat (since washing will be nil during the cold months). BlackIce, based on reviews I`ve read fulfills this role for winter protection well as it appears to be super durable and fairly resistant to neglect. It`ll also work well with the original AFPP/poly/CS coatings! I`d probably top it with Midnight Sun in the summer on a monthly basis for that extra warm look.

I`m wondering if there`s alternatives though, for a few reasons.
    A) My car is red. BlackIce is designed for dark paints, but I`ve seen many pictoral reviews showing it works great on any colour.
I want a wax to enhance/give warmth due to the red. BlackIce I believe has been described as a sort of "inky gloss", while high Carnauba is described to be "warm". Given the regimen of cleaning I have for the car (once every week or two, with poly top offs), a weaker durability wax could suffice for the duty of adding warmth (possibly once a month in the summer). I`m looking at Midnight sun for that role.
    C) I would prefer to minimize the amount of waxes I have to get. Waxes are not cheap... BFBI would functionally last me a VERY long time even with the sampler 3oz. to finish. I drive a Fiat 500; she takes a lot less to maintain!

Any thoughts on what alternatives could be possible? At the moment I`m looking at BFBI and BFMS. I`m open to other suggestions though, if possible a single wax that delivers long term protection and warmth.

You can`t go wrong with either one of those. The 3 oz size will last you awhile. Another wax that fly`s under the radar is DP max wax. To be honest you can`t go wrong with any of the house brands.

Tough choice. Since your daily driver takes a lot of abuse, I`d go with BlackICE. If you were in friendlier weather conditions, then I`d go with BFMS.

    +1 on DP Max Wax.

+1. You only need the smaller one as it will last a long time. applies very thin and you don`t wait for hazing. this will give you the warm look you are trying to achieve. If you have harsh driving conditions, I would reapply every 30 days. Maintain in between with MS Instant Detailer after 2BM wash (as drying aide while paint is still minimally wet after a sheeting rinse) and Polymer Spray after rinseless washes (on dry paint).

You really shouldn`t need to apply CS more than once every 6 months. Use it as your topper after BFWD (wait 24 hours after BFWD, then 2 coats of CS 1 hour apart). If you top that with MS and maintain after washes as mentioned above, you shouldn`t need to reapply CS until your next full detail.

    Thanks guys!

Looks like I`ll stick to BFBI and BFMS. I`ll hold off on the BFMS for now, as I`ll survive with poly/CS until next summer season.. I think.

I tend to use CS for the windows right now until I get my hands on some Gtechniq G5, and it works great. I find it diminishes to a noticeable level (water flies off at around 55km/h fresh, after about 2 weeks it starts to work around 65+) that I`ll need to re-apply. Regular wash/top off right now holds with poly spray, and I`ll keep that going until winter.

I`ll have to pick up some rinseless/waterless washes next year as I`m finding the full shampoo loads are a bit much for summer dust.

Maybe I`ll start a sort of long term winter torture test for BFBI when I get it...

    +1 on DP Max Wax.
Vega (or anyone who`s used both) .... I live in the Northeast and I`m looking for a Carnauba wax as well. It needs to be effective on dark (BMW Space Gray Metallic) AND light colored paints since I own both.

Why the BlackICE over Midnight Sun?

SON1C Wax Phoenix is another wax in the mix.

Is SON1C or DP Max Wax a better choice if it`s not intended for winter protection?

Most pure carnauba waxes on average last 3-8 weeks. BlackICE is a hybrid wax with added polymers (a blend of natural and synthetic wax). So it`s more durable than a pure carnauba wax, lasting up to 20 weeks. Although it was designed for black cars, it looks great on any color. There are a lot of examples and reviews online on different colors, including white. For best results, properly prep the surface first, then apply a sealant first. BLACKFIRE Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection would be perfect. Allow it to fully cure for 12 hours before topping the sealant with BlackICE.

To prep the surface, first wash the car. Then perform the "baggie test" to determine if you need to clay or not. If you don`t need to clay, use a non abrasive polish or chemical cleaner like BLACKFIRE Gloss Enhancing Polish to clean the paint and prepare it for the sealant and wax combo.

If it`s not intended for winter protection, both are great choices. There is a considerable price gap between the two. SON1C wax Pheonix is $85.00 for 5.07 oz while DP Max Wax is 39.99 for 8 oz. I`d consider DP Max Wax to be more of a pure "beauty" wax, while SON1C wax is more durable and look shinier. I would expect SON1C Wax to last longer on the paint. The fact that DP Max Wax can compete with a wax that costs more than three times its cost per ounce, ($16.77 per oz v.s. $5.00 per oz) is an example of what we mean when we say it "flies under the radar".

I`ve already clayed the car and I`m polishing with SF4000. Any wax I choose would not be intended for winter protection, but that doesn`t eliminate any of the waxes I`ve asked about from consideration. I used Sonax Polymer Net Shield for winter protection last year and in my opinion, the durability is awesome.

For the warm weather months, I`ve been using Einszett Glanz and Prima Hydro Max mostly because of their ease of application and removal. I have a BFWD sample, but I`ve never applied it to the entire car.

My concern with the higher priced waxes is not so much the initial cost. It’s more of what do I do with a half used pot of wax when the “next great wax” comes out. It’s a lot easier to give away or not use a $20 wax as opposed to an $85 dollar wax.

Thanks for the explanation between the waxes!

We could feed the world (or pay for the next coming war) if we cashed in on all the unused car wax sitting on dusty shelves. Drug addicts and neocons have nothing on waxaholics 😉
