What does "Nano" mean

I`ll admit to being ignorant...at least about this and come to think of it, about a lot of things. Seems like a lot of products are now saying stuff like "Nano emulsified...Nano fortified??" Nano this, Nano that etc. What does that all mean and or relevant to waxes?

Nano means small and or expensive bottles. Nano is to sealant as Flux Capacitor is to DeLorean! MARKETING does not cost it pays!

Thing is, on a fundamental level there are some differences between the nano-coatings and regular sealants.

ok, for all of you guys who slept through science class, nano is a scientific prefix: as in nanometer- one billionth of a meter. measurements used at the molecular level, etc. some manufacturers like to think of the molecular bonding abilities of their products expressed in nano terms. ok fine, you can go back to sleep now !

Correct. I actually had a very nice discussion about `nano` with Rick Goldstien of RaggTopp fame. Nano, in terms of marketing for car care products, means very very very (often sub-micron) small.

If the products were actually nano in size they would be dangerous. The pores in our skin, lungs, and nose are larger that than a nanometer. This means the chemicals (or solid ingredients in the chemicals) would leech directly into our bloodstreams. Not good. You wouldn`t want millions of nanometer sized silicone polymers coursing through your bloodstream, where they could leech into the cells or other tissues.

In terms of detailing products, a lot of products perform better when they are smaller. Finishing abrasives for example. The solid ingredients of a wax or sealant will level better if they are smaller in size (leveling as defined as creating a more microscopically level surface which reflects light more evenly when cured). The polymers used in tire dressing will adhere better to the rubber and the polymers used in paint sealants will better grip the paint.

There is no doubt, that in most cases, extremely small solids benefit almost all detailing chemicals. While they might not truly be a nanometer in size, they are extremely small, and the marketing term nano accurately describes this.

Remember the season when Mork and Mindy had a child, but everything was backward? Mork sat on the egg during gestation and the child was born as an adult and got smaller as he aged? They never explained the fertilization...that confused me more than the nano detailing quandry.
