Wolfgang SiO2 Paint Sealant versus Traditional Sealants - Test!

This test to compare Wolfgang SiO2 Paint Sealant versus some traditional sealants. I tried to break vertical panels up into comparable groupings.
The panels were cleaned with PBL Surface Cleansing Lotion and were squeaky clean to the touch afterwards.
The sealants were applied on 4/24/2020 late at night. 62degF in the garage during application, temp went as low as 57degF during the night time curing. On each panel, Wolfgang SiO2 Paint Sealant resides in the middle.

Below are all contestants listed drivers side to passengers side:

    Hood - The OG Slicksters
    - Blackfire Sealant
    - Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant
    - Wolfgang SiO2 Paint Sealant
    - Jescar Powerlock
    - Four Star Ultimate Paint Protectant

Back Roof - The Modern Classics
    - PBL Sealant
    - Mckees Hi Def
    - Wolfgang SiO2 Paint Sealant
    - Polish Angel Master Sealant
    - 3D HD Poxy

Trunk Lid - The OG Beasts
    - Collinite 476
    - Collinite 845
    - Wolfgang SiO2 Paint Sealant
    - Sonax PNS
    - Finish Kare 1000p Hi Temp Paste Wax

    Front Roof - Bonus Contestants
    - Collinite 915
    - Poorboys EX-P

The car is still in the garage and will stay there until a minimum 24 hours cure time. I’ll post back for updates.

    Thanks for reading.

Edit: I forgot to mention, these sealants are so amazingly slick. PNS is of course not so slick. Poxy is more smooth like a carnauba than slick. All the others feel like Beadmaker slick. Gotta love sealants if you like this kind of thing!

My bet is that FK1000P, the Wolfgang products, Polish Angel, and Sonax PNS last the longest, and any of them could win.

No love for the Collinite’s, huh?

It will be tough for me not to use an occasional QD or gloss-enhancing car wash on these panels for such a long time, but will do my best. At all costs I won’t use anything significant like a spray wax.

Collinite`s are great products that are pretty durable, but when stacked up against the products that I listed, I don`t think they will win. However, I could be proven wrong.

I’m a hardcore sale hunter. The deal was probably very good, and it’s tough for me to shell out $50 (or ~$35 on sale) for 8oz when I could get a 32oz jug for ~$75. But in hindsight, the stuff spreads extremely far and I’ve only used about 5oz in 2 years (after about 8 full applications and numerous tests).

Re: Wolfgang SiO2 Paint Sealant versus Traditional Sealants - Test!

Updated plan: Due to circumstances, I need to get the car outside earlier than planned. It is expected to start light rain at the 24-25 hour mark (since application). Then heavy rain overnight from the 30 hour mark through the next day. One and a half inches expected.

So a benefit of sealants is supposedly being less finicky than coatings as far as release to the wild. All of them identify 24 hours or less cure time on their labels, including WG SiO2. So the test will begin by mimicking a normal detail job where a car is provided back to the customer at 24 hours in any weather.

Re: Wolfgang SiO2 Paint Sealant versus Traditional Sealants - Test!

    Update (the next day):
First beading shots after a night of heavy rain. Everything looks great. Sealants aren’t shabby beaders, even if they don’t sheet as well as ceramic-infused products. Still, PNS looks slightly nicer than the rest. WG SiO2 slightly nicer than most the sealants. But when brand new, these all look great.

I’ll include reference shots with updates to remember what products are where.

    Hood

    Trunk Lid

    Back Roof

    Front Roof

I then took the car on a 1.5 hour drive through heavy rain with my son (because we NEED to get out of the house and driving is the only truly mobile-quarantine thing to do these days). I mention this because I’ve been putting on 100+ miles per day on this car over the past 3 weeks due to these rides. And when there is moderate rain, we storm chase. Today there was no need to chase, it’s a one-inch washout throughout the day.

My point above is that this car doesn’t just sit outside during these tests. It drives. And when possible it drives through rain, wind or snow. So consider it a mini-real life torture test as long as the country remains shut down.

And for the record, Sonax PNS has been my go to sealant. From a durability standpoint, it’s hard to beat. I was just in the mood to try something different.

Did any stand out good, or bad from a appearance standpoint? Maybe a rating on ease of application.

A few were noticed during wipe off.

    - Master Sealant, being on the roof, my eye level noticed the reflection of the light bulb and garage roof right away. This stands as the one that popped in my head the most when reading your question.

    - 845 was noticed for immediately brightening the surface and making the flakes pop.

    - 1000p which I never used was noticeably even brighter than Collinite and very “acrylic”, I guess. Not sure how to describe in my own words. Cold and reflective at the surface. It’s like I finally knew what the 1000s of Accumulator’s posts were referring too (though I didn’t look back at them to better my description).

    - The 4 on the front (plus WG SiO2) are the first I applied and their slickness blew me away during wipe off. It’s been awhile since applying traditional sealants. When stepping back from the front of the vehicle after wipe off, I recalled wondering if this is the best I’ve ever seen the paint look this nice. The driver’s side of the hood had a bit of a darkened hue compared to the Powerlock next to the center. The WG offerings either darken a bit (and I know BF darkens) or the Powerlock lightens. But the darkened look still looked great and as reflective.

When I put the car outside last night while sun was still out, I was blown away again. This silver paint definitely shines with the brightness that sealants provide. I know it sounds cliche and everyone use to say it, but holy crow.
