Exhaust Staining on Rear Bumper/Trunk

My last few vehicles have been tuned turbo cars. One issue I always have with them is the exhaust staining the whole rear bumper/trunk. It usually yellows the paint with a film that is hard to remove. It does not come off using normal wash techniques if it`s left for any period of time. I wash my current vehicle quite frequently so it`s not as big of an issue but I`d love to hear some recommendations on how to clean this easier. I usually just let an APC dwell for a while and then wash but this strips LSP which is not ideal. If it`s real bad a cleaner polish is required. Iron-X also usually helps quite a bit. I`m not sure what it is that is actually being deposit on the paint...

A friend just contacted me with the same issue. His car is white and it has a lot of yellow staining on the rear. I`m going to give him a hand getting cleaned up.

I figured you guys may be able to provide a little insight.

I say hit it with polish (like UC), then seal it (maybe with a long-term one like opti-seal 2.0) and a durable wax. That will hold the unburned hydrocarbons off for some time.

I agree that a coating might be your best bet. If I were going to try a traditional LSP I think I would put a couple of coats of Collinite 845 on it. This stuff is very heat resistant and durable. Its even used on the hulls of boats to prevent salt water oxidation.

Ya, I recommended coating the vehicle to him as it should help with regular cleaning. It currently has hydro2 on it although it was done sometime ago.

Agreed. If you do go Collinite it will save some money but if you go that route I would probably hit that area maybe every couple weeks with some fresh coats. I did some on the rear wheels of my car to test the durability with that kind of heat and it was maybe 3 weeks before I noticed performance going down.

Maybe it`s just me, but if this was my car, and it was getting stained from just driving it, I would really want to put something like Opti-Coat on it, to protect the back end and not have to remove all my clear coat any longer..

Then, while you are at it, may as well prepare the rest of the car for Opti-Coat, etc., and then you will have a really nice look with years of protection..
