That looks like a ton of fun.... Lol.

I really want to try the BF metal polish kit. I keep hearing good things, but it`s so hard to spend $150 on metal polish.

Man, I think I might opt for new tips on this guy. You get those clean and you will be a hero. Look forward to hearing back on your luck and what products you used.

Ones that bad Ive had success using 1000 grit sandpaper and lots of soapy water when nothing else would work including even 000 steel wool.

Thanks for the reply. Would you go to the sandpaper before trying car polishes?

The tips on my son`s car were that bad and I got them clean by hand with Mothers Chrome Cleaner. They came out like new, it only took me about 1/2 hour to 45 min. to do both by hand.

The car was 4 years old and they had never been done.

You can see some picks here where the tips shows.

First, like anything else the best method it to never let it get too caked on. As a routine when I was the car I spray. P21S TAW (Total Auto Wash) on all Wheel Wells, Tires and Exaust tips.

If they are not too back a quick wipe with a MF brings them back to perfect.

If the tips get cruddy after the winter neglect, or if I am in the tear down and re-build stage of a detail I polish with P21s Polishing Soap. Then use a tar removal product, followed by a metal Polish like Optimum Metal Polish or Never Dull (cotton Wadding). If the tips are really bad you can use some 0000 brass or steel wool to scrub with using an APC for lube. lastly I wash is with the rest of the car.

When the tips are as clean as possible I wipe them with IPA, and seal it with Colonite Metal Wax or Poli-Seal. Nothing last too long on Hot tips but once they are clean and sealed they clean up very easily in the future.

    Good Luck.

OK let`s me change it up a bit here - HOW do you polish and clean them? I am trying to come up with some way to polish them using a strip of MF and some compound to clean them like an airport person buffing my shoes - but not sure it`s working. I can wipe off wax, but I need to get out a bunch of tiny scratches before I LSP them...

No,never .Always try something the least aggressive first. 1000 grit is last resort. 1000 grit may scratch some so go easy and use lots of soapy water or a lubricant with it. When you get most of the crud off use a polish afterwards.

Now it`s time to slap some OC on them and make them easier to care for in the future. Or maybe some BF Metal Sealant.

Not perfect as a lot of damage was done from the years of neglect, but much improved!
