Epoxy-Sheild Floor Installed this weekend

I just finished applying the coating a few hours ago and I am very pleased with the results so far.

Since we are usually very interested in the process used, here was mine.

On Friday I cleared out the garage and stuck everything inside my house or in the backyard. I cleaned out the garage with a brush and an Airblower. I then took a 50:50 bottle of Simple Green and scrubbed any areas that seemed to have any oil residue. My garage floor was very clean anyways so there were not very many stains.

I then rinsed out the garage 2 times with a hose. Instead of using the squeegee that is recommended by Rustoleum, I held a Airblower in one hand and the hose in the other. Whenever I hit an area with water, I immediately followed with the airblower so as to avoid any pooling of water in the Garage.

Then Saturday I went over the entire Garage floor with the included cleaner and a stiff brush. Rinsed twice the same way as above and then waited.

This morning I woke up and got to work in the garage at about 9am. The floor did not take very long to complete. Maybe 3 hours as I finished in time for lunch. It would have gone much faster if I had someone else that could have spread the chips while I painted.

Reading through this website, I noticed that a lot of people that have done this floor, ran out of chips. So keeping that in mind while I was applying the chips, I went very light on the chips. I used three gallons of epoxy coating on my 3 car garage but only 2 bags of those chips. Anyone that has a need for the extra bag of chips I have, post a picture of your garage and tell me why you need them. The first person to ask and show me a pic of your garage will get them for free.

:woot: very nice, keep us posted on how well it holds up, especially on hot tire contact and scratching. What color is that?!

It is the grey that rustoleum does.

I put mine down in January and so far no problems.

Awesome. Did you acid etch first? I have found that neglecting to do so will significantly shorten the ammount of time it remains clean and adhered to the concrete.

If I have this correct, it`s not the durability of the epoxy, but being able to permanently "adhere" to the concrete without lifting up, right? After seeing his floor, I am swaying back and forth between epoxy and race deck!

Shiny Lil Detlr - Yes I acid etched on Saturday and then rinsed the heck out of the floor and let it set overnight and coated it on Sunday.

kevganzon - I can`t really comment on the durability yet as I just did the floor this weekend.

roaringmouse - If you look back on that thread of yours, you will notice I was very interested in how you did it. I got the idea from you.

armoredsaintt - Exactly. Prepping the floor is the most important part to prevent any lifting is how I understand it.

I did our garage 3 years ago and besides some wear and some chipping it still looks ok, no hot tire pick up at all!

is it the epoxy shield too? did you acid etch also? please tell!

I used epoxy-shield on our floor last summer. So far it looks great.

I got a kit like that and am planning on doing it to my second garage as soon as we get steady weather...My question is when you go to paint it, do you do it in your socks or just make sure your shoes are REEEEALY clean? That may sound stupid but they specify a clean floor. Can you be specific on the chip application. Just toss `em on the wet paint or what? Thank you in advance!

I applied mine barefoot.

Be sure the surface is very clean. I scrubbed/rinsed mine 4 times on my hands/knees before I could run my fingers across the surface and not pick up powder.

It`s recommended to paint a small area at a time and then sprinkle the chips over that area. Be careful not to overlap when painting. The areas where I overlapped are noticeably thicker then the rest of the garage.
