Has anyone here ever built a fold down work bench for their garage? I have what I`d describe as a slightly-larger-than-one-car garage but I don`t have enough space for a permanent work bench.

I`ve been thinking of building something that folds down from the wall that has legs (that also fold up when stored). I need it to support a vise so it will be somewhat beefy. I was thinking of trying to track down a cheap solid door and go from there. But I was curious if anyone here has done something like this?

    Thanks,

    Doug

I did something similar in my barn workshop, made out of 2x4s and a piece of 3/4" thick MDF for the worktop. Supports a vise just fine and is mounted to the wall with door hinges so it will fold down flat against the wall if needed.

Charlie, helped a friend build one very similar to yours, works great for him.

i finally broke down and found a all heavy steel table for welding and mounted my 5 inch vise to it.

Actually was for a conveyer system, got it for $40.00! Scrap price is more than that.

It weighs 400 lbs so that vise don`t move!

2x4`s, 3/4 (or thicker) MDF, folds UP on a piano hinge. Only need legs in the front, also hinged so as you lower it down from the wall the legs extend. Mount at work height. You can add dog holes, tail vises, etc. There are lots of plans on the internet. An interesting one is where half the depth folds down so the lower half acts like a shelf like this: Wall mounted work bench Mount a large four+ bulb flourescent over it, wire an outlet and you are set.
