Do they still make those garage doors that are one solid piece, not segmented, and flip up and out as if on a giant hinge. They don`t roll straight up and on rails like most do nowadays.

    What are they called?

Any idea where I could buy one?

What are the pros and cons?

I`m having a garage built, and I just remember how cool they seemed to me as a kid.

I seem to remember them being much quieter to raise and lower, I am not going to be installing an electric garage door opener.

    Thanks for any info!

I don`t know about that particular style, but wooden garage doors are much quieter than the sheet metal ones that most houses have today.

A neighbor two doors down has them. Here`s the biggest problem I see: They tilt at about 3/4 of the way up the opening. Short car / short person... may work okay. I know they can`t get their blazer in the garage becasue the doors hang too low.

    His springs aren`t strong enough.

We have a four car garage with "old school" doors and ours all go 100% of the way up and stay there. The downside I guess is you run the risk of opening doors out into a car, where as the newer style can`t damage a car that way.

Also, make sure the wood is well treated with several coats of water sealant or they can absorb water since they touch the ground when closed. :2thumbs:

Hmmm...I guess I don`t know how they work then. Their garage is exactly the same as mine, but with their door up, they probably have 10"-12" less headroom than I have with my roll-up. Their door goes up to a horizontal position, but it`s not at the top of the opening. Maybe their mechanism is installed too low?

Have you considered `carriage doors`, that swing open and closed, one on each side? Classy. Plenty of clearance.

I`m thinking about these doors for an `internal` garage door, between the garage and the basement workshop. They wouldn`t look as stupid as the curent overhead door, in the workshop.

wood doors on most garages now a days eh? maybe around your part of time bud.

the light multi piece doors are the most popular here because of cost effectiveness vs wood.

/maybe just a detroit metro thing?

Just my observation. Don`t know how much more they cost.
