I`m assuming you do run the water for the RO->DI system through your softener first, right? We filter and soften *all* our household/shop water other than two outdoor spigots.

It is softened first but it doesn`t really matter. If the water is 1600 ppm going into the softener it`s still 1600 ppm coming out. All the softener does is exchange minerals for salt. Ideally it`s a 1:1 ion swap so the amount of impurity doesn`t change, just what kind of impurity it is. Without the RO pre treatment I would get about 30 gallons out of a full resin refill. That got expensive quickly!

pmnewton- Despite the ion-exchange being 1:1, my resin seems to last longer now that I run softened water through it. Eh, maybe I`m overlooking something....

glad you loved your investment. i love mine. but i made the mistake of letting it sit for more than 30 days and the resin went bad. i didnt know about the resin building up mold or something like that and stops working. will leave water spots. i have to buy replacement resin now

Oddly enough, that hasn`t happened to me (yet?), despite mine sitting unused for weeks/months at a time. Probably jinxed myself by posting that

Those CR spotless units look like something a person could make themselves. PMNEWTON...where does the TDS sensor connect on the CR unit? It doesn`t appear to connect to a line-out, so just wondering where CR mounted it?

For those with CR Spotless systems, what are you doing between uses to maintain it? Are there any of you that only use it maybe 3-4 times a month? Want to get one but would only be using it a few times a month.

I don`t do *anything*. Don`t drain it, nothing. My resin seems to hold up just fine anyhow (gee, famous last words).
