five inch pads?
There is another counter balance weight for 6" pads. To be honest I have it and don`t use it. I have a 5" backing plate and use up to 6.5" pads with no problem. I leave the standard weight on when I switch to a 3.5" plate with no problem either. I would only worry if you feel you have excessive vibration. That is the advice given to me by CMA; they have plenty of experience with the pads they sell. I`ve had no problems.

Porter Cable makes this optional counter weight available for their Porter Cable 7424 polisher if you upgrade from their 5 inch backing plate/pad to a 6 inch, Hook-and-Loop Backing Plate. We have never had any problems or failures using our Flexible 6 inch Backing Plate with our 6-1/2 inch foam pads with the stock weight for normal detailing. If you detail for a living where the machine is in constant use, we recommend switching to this counter weight.
I hear voices in my mind and you’re worried that you’re the freak.
THX biolink for that info that is something that i have wounder about also.
I have a 5" backing plate and use both 5.5" and 6.5" pads with no problems.
I`ve found that the 5.5" pads cut quite a bit faster than the 6.5. So I use the 5.5 more.
