    Thoughts on defect removal

Hello, I recently joined the forum and have been reading as much as I can. I`ve learned alot and enjoy all the info available. I`m working on my car, and am extremely happy with the results i`m getting so far, but have a spot on my hood I cant seem to do anything with. I`m using a griots da polisher with orange, blue, and white ccs pads. I`ve been using all poorboys products so far ssr2, polish with sealant, black hole, then nattys black. I have an old craftsman rotary machine I used to use with wool pads and meguiars 105 and 205 compounds but I really dont like using the rotary due to how easy it is to burn the clear.

Thats the spot on the hood i`m trying to get out. I`m not sure if a yellow ccs pad with the 105 would do the trick or not, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I haven`t seen too many corrections that m105 on an orange pad couldn`t handle. you may have to finish off with m205 or ssr2 on a white pad, but m105 often finishes nicely by itself with light or no pressure at the end. can you feel if the defect is on the surface of the clear?

I can not feel it on the surface, i went over it with the ssr2 and orange pad and it feels smooth now, has me worried it might be a blemish in the clear itself and not on top.

Yeah, it`s entirely possible that "cloud" is beneath the clearcoat. Sometimes it`s best to quit while you`re still ahead

    Welcome aboard, Diesel !

    Re: Thoughts on defect removal

What year, model, and color is that called ?

Well, if that is below the surface, it might be the start of a clearcoat failure there and nothing can help it..
If you take enough material off to get to it, that will not make it go away - instead it will have be way less glossy there and will only make it worse because all the clearcoat is not gone..
Do you have a way to measure the total thickness there with a meter ?

Thanks for the replies, after looking at it a little more I think I am going to leave it alone instead of risking going too far with it and going through the clear.

your far left defect looks like cracked clear to me (IMO)

(my car is the exact same color btw)

I would be weary of going too far in. Especially considering you don`t have a coating to put on top of that clear that might be getting pretty thin...

Wednesday I am going to mail you the 3d AAT Twins (compound and polish) we spoke about over the weekend

I managed to misplace my Paint Thickness Reader (yea I know- that`s bad), assuming I find it and it didn`t walk out of my garage, I can use it to read the clear sometime.

    Dieselwrench and Brandt -

Well what you do you know - I have the same color paint on my 2009 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 Hemi ---- Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat ---

Looking at it, I am assuming those light spots all around are cloud reflections ?
If so, and that spot is now darker, it looks like the clear coat is gone now.. Not a good thing if this is the case...

    Anyone live close by ?
    Im over 2,000 miles away...

    edit:
(he`s one of the few guys in the club who takes my advice-lol)

but that type of issue is above my skill level at this time (never tried)

    welcome to the forum ...

sorry wrong approach .. that stain needs a chemical polish (Professional Polish) not a mechanical polish or compound or cutting pad .. try Pro Polish and a cotton cloth by hand
life is short ..do it while you can
