2015 Silverado, when to walk away!

This was brought for me to see if I could fix after the dealer had tried twice. After doing paint measures we found a dangerous amount of clear had been removed. Some areas were down to 3.0 miles from the factory 5.0! It was decided I would not touch the truck. Sent the client back to the dealer and he now has GM involved. We shall see?

Ouch, good call on that one, that could have turned into a nightmare with such low readings.

Re: 2015 Silverado, when to walk away!

    Mike,
So the lowest reading was 76.2 microns = 3 Mils...
Factory average is 127 Microns = 5 Mils..

How badly swirled was it at those low places?
The entire truck is just swirled, right?
Or is the clearcoat already burned through in places ?

GM is probably just going to take it to some Detail shop and see if they can fix this knowing they (GM) will take the hit if it breaks the clearcoat..
And it this fails they will probably if they are nice, just repaint it and hopefully another DCR (Drunk Clown with a Rotary) will not touch it again..

It is truly sad what people try to pass as acceptable is so not even close anymore...

+1 on the good call for the no go. guess who the dealership would have blamed if you tried to help out and even improved the finish?

There was 2 spots on the tailgate at 2.5 mils, about the size area of an 8 inch pad! No burn thru but you can see it was an old wool pad. Oh and this truck was 2 weeks old!

Shame Such a nice truck too.
Good on you for taking the proper course, and a good reminder of the importance of a PTG.

Looking forward to hearing how that goes!

I don`t get it, what do these dealerships expect to get out of buffing an already unswirled finish? (assuming it hasn`t been touched yet)

Such a shame. Let the dealer deal with it, either way, the paint is covered under warranty. And if it`s been mauled that bad already, it`s bound to fail, and probably within a year or two.

Good call and thanks for sharing, I will be purchasing a PTG before next season

Wow - 2.5 Mil = 63.5 microns - way lower than I would ever be happy to work with, and that 63.5 microns is the Total amount of material ( primer, sealer if applied, base coat/clear coat).. on the panel unless you are using the most expensive DeFelsko meter, that that is measuring just the paint...

The Client should use the Lemon-Law if possible to make the Dealer buy it back, if they dont willingly do it...

Cant believe they ruined a new truck like this ! Dang those DCR`s....

I would never accept anything less than another new truck and let them have the one they ruined. Or have them take a substantial price off the truck only after repainting it. The hit to the value of the truck having been repainted could be 1000s

Cars don`t come perfect from the factory. Here are some examples of "not touched" cars as they arrived at the dealer.

I`d rather deal with that, than a completely hacked vehicle
