Gel coat on a boat is alot softer then clear, maybe 105 is to aggressive, try hitting it with a one-step or going over with a polish that removes light scracthes, Hope this helps.

Gel coat is normally a lot tougher than clear coat and usually requires heavy compounding with a rotary buffer, or even wetsanding if the oxidation is bad enough.

To the OP, yes that`s normal. If oxidation is as bad as it sounds, multiple passes may be required to achieve a nice finish.

Depending on how wrecked the boat is... (let`s just say just the hull for now)

There`s a variety of options to correct the gel coat. For boats the have rust stains or severe discoloration using an acid based product (Mary Kate - On and Off) to "cut through" initially.

A word of caution: Be careful to not let the product touch the bottom paint. It can strip through and discolor!

Then proceed as you wish using a rotary / wool to compound and quality wax or polish.

Thank you ive heard people say its soft before after a couple of passes i didnt see how that can be. ive tried to three step it, but it seems to be more effective to use meguires oxidation remover. that being said it doesnt seem to cut as much as it cleans.
