Did I just hologram the ```` outta my car??

First wash of the season... Protectant totally absent from the winter storage.
After wash, I clayed the finish, using a foam gun and soapy Pinnacle XMT for lubricant....
    This is the outcome...
Of course I plan on going over it with SSR 1 with a DA and black pad before I start sealing and waxing...
But jeezus! I hope SSR 1 with a DA is enough. (did paint correction last year with rotary, so it`s just the hologramming on there now)
Don`t like creating work for myself!

Maybe it`s clay residue? Do you wash after claying?
The clay was over a year old but didn`t feel hard or dried out.

    Someone please comment!

Looks like clay was not lubed enough and transferred to the paint. Is that clay on he surface ?

Agree with JSFM35X...looks like there wasn`t sufficient lube used and the clay marred the surface.

I`ve used soapy suds before with out wrecking the finish. I guess next time I`ll buy a proper clay lube. Ugh!

Sorry this happened to you. Typically soap alone provides enough lubricity to prevent such marring/ residue. At least it always has for me.

Was the surface hot when you started? Did you wash/ clay in full sun? Just trying to think of reasons this happened - what to look out for next time.

I have become a HUGE fan of Immolube concentrate for making clay lube.
Hopefully, it is "old" clay residue and can be removed without any becoming an issue.

On the other hand, I`ve also become a big fan of polymerized rubber for decon.
Nanoskin AutoScrub Fine Grade Wash Mitt
    Nanoskin Autoscrub Towel Fine Grade
Nanoskin Autoscrub Fine Foam Pad 6 inch (for a DA polisher)
I only use the FINE grade. Although, I`ve not had micro marring, you may need to polish.

Your first problem is getting the "old" clay residue off the paint without causing an issue.

    Let us know your results.

Re: Did I just hologram the ```` outta my car??

I`m a genuine Clay Lube Snob and for me that makes a big diff. But then, whenever I see marring that indicates [something] was repeatedly moved for many inches worth of travel at a time...well, I think "uh-oh".

Eh, clay shouldn`t actually *touch the paint*, it`s supposed to glide along on a film of lube until it bumps into contamination, which it then shears off. Theoretically, at least...does take a bit of doing for it to work that way in practice (which is probably why it takes me so many hours to clay a vehicle, but I never have an "oops!" either).

Car was in the shade and kept wet the entire morning...
Upon investigating the foam soap mixture, it occurred to me that I cut it with Spray Nine last year, as I typically used the foamer on the rims alone. Ouch! The stuff is basically an anti-soap, light degreaser. Ugh!

Waiting for new backing pad to arrive for the DA then I can hit it. Hoping SSR 1 with black will work, as I don`t want to go thru multiple polishing steps. SSR 2 on black works really well as a finally step I`m told, as well.

WuNgNu- Yikes, that`d explain it! But I`d still give a little thought to being a lot more gentle/careful about the clayingm, even if you don`t go overboard the way I do.

It isn`t something I do regularly... Car was stored outside all winter though, so the paint took some abuse.

Try to scrape the old clay off before polishing the car. You would probably just smear the clay more rather than remove it. Maybe try hot soapy water to remove it. A plastic razor blade may be helpful.

Just a thought...there are two ways to remove residue. Chemical and Mechanical. I`d try Chemical first. To me that means IPA, Carpro Spotless or Eraser, mineral spirits etc.

A 20% IPA / water solution with a drop of Dawn dish soap should remove those smears. Let the solution do the work. Test first.

I`m almost 100% there isn`t any residue, except for 1 or 2 spots. Especially with using Spray Nine as a lube!
What you see in the pic is marring/holograming...
Tomorrow I`ll find out and post pics.

Speaking of chemical vs. mechanical, [INSERT my usual opinion about using Decontamination Chemicals instead of clay]
