I am having a hard time using speed 6 on my PC 7424. It seems like there is a very large jump in speed between 5 and 6. And one jump, in fact - the speed doesn`t change at all while I`m moving the adjuster after passing 5 until I hit 6 and then it just starts going at LUDICROUS SPEED. The whole unit vibrates so much I can hardly hold onto it. It looks like the pad is also vibrating like crazy and not staying flat on the body panel. What`s the issue here? Wrong counterweight, pads, or just put up with it?

If it goes plaid look out!

It sounds like the counterweight is wrong.

Most PC`s, it seems, don`t really have a speed of 5.5.... it jumps from 5 to 6. You can set it for 5.5, but IIRC that is still speed 5 until you bump it up to 6. I use speed 6 a lot and don`t really have any vibration problems. You want to make sure your pad is centered, and if all else fails you can try changing your counterweight. This link shows you where it is located:

I run a 5" backing plate with a 5" counterweight and haven`t had any vibration problems running pads that range from 6" to about 7". Exceldetail carries both the 5" and 6" counterweights.

The possibility exists that you might have a bad PC (bearings, motor, etc.), but I would check your pad centering and then try another counterweight before blaming the PC.

Good to see we have some Spaceballs fans :spot

My PC came with a 5" counterweight and with my 6" backing plate on speed 6 it would vibrate like something most people have to pay for :chuckle:

I bought a 6" CW and it helped, not a huge difference, but it was definitely an improvement. I have also noticed that my PC doesn`t seem to have a 5.5 either, judging by the sound of the machine it doesn`t seem to change anywhere between 5 and 6.

Then again, you could always just use the Schwartz to fix it :2thumbs:

It will say "USE 5 (or 6) INCH PAD ONLY" on the counterweight. The following link has a good picture of them:

I have not seen a PC yet with a 5.5 speed...lol...but see it mentioned alot ..

Anyways...it seems like the PC works nice with a 5 inch backing plate and 6 inch pads..there is hardly any vibrations,,at least for me...

I tried experimenting with the counter weights and seen no real difference..It may help if your using 7-71/2 inch pads..but with 6-61/2 in pads no difference...

remember the larger the pad..the more surface resistance and you get a jiggle instead of a oscillation...jiggling is what tears the velcro up

For defect removal, I always use speed 6. Its definately louder but not ludicrous.

I also wish it had a speed 7... maybe time for a rotary!

Mine sounds like it`s about to launch for space at 6. I`m always trying ever so carefully to nudge it up just past 5 to get a little more speed (while polishing) then BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ V-Tec kicks in. I used to hate running at speed 6 but anymore it`s natural.

USE THE SCHWARTZ! And yes, my PC does the same thing...goes right from 5 to 6.
