would there be a big difference in using a PC 7424 versus a similar orbital polisher unit from Costco? I plan on using the Menzerna PO106FF to remove swirls from my black Mercedes...should the results be similar?
If the results are the same....then I can save a few $$$ and not have to buy the PC7424.

I doubt it will be as effective.

What year is your Benz? If its newer with the ceramiclear clearcoat you won`t make much of a dent with 106ff and a PC. That is the combo you would finish out with after something like SIP and a orange pad. Depending on how severe the defects area, a PC may not remove all of the defects.

What other polishes/pads do you have?

Only have hand waxed it once a year and improper car wash methods by myself has created lots of swirls. After joining this forumn I am ready to do things the right way.
I am starting fresh....I need to look into buying a good buffer/polisher machine, the correct pads, and the right polishing brand/item# to solve my problem.
Keep in mind that I am not a pro so I can`t be using a machine that can burn the paint. Please advise.

Hi Tony,

Those store bought buffers are not going to be very effective in removing swirls from your car. They are OK to use to apply cleaner wax but that`s about it. I used one for many years in detailing but when I started using a PC, the old buffer went to the boneyard.

The PC is ideal for novices who want to take their detailing to the next level. Some advanced detailers like Bryan and Todd have developed processes to get the best results from the worst paint conditions.

The big advantage of the PC over an orbital buffer is its peformance and flexibility. With the buffer you are limited to using cheap bonnets as pads, you have no speed control (either on or off) and they do not have enough torque to remove major defects. With a PC you have a huge variety of pads which can be used with almost any polish, you have a speed control and it has plenty of torque. It`s a huge step up from a buffer and worth the investment.

I would start with SIP then follow with 106FA then to finsh off with 3M ultrafina.

Dude, I`ve been to Costco. I know what you`re talking about. It`s a random orbital polisher. You can use it to apply wax and that`s about it. Go for the PC and you`ll have the best looking vehicle in the neighborhood,

to get the job done in my case. The more I read the more I want to step up to the better machines like the Flex or Cyclo...but more $$$... and I am not a professional detailer...just a weekend warrior. Any one has comments on these two higher end machines?

The swirls on my black 1999 Benz are noticeable in the sun from a few feet away..so it is somewhat kinda bad I suppose. My original plan was to polish with a PC, orange pad, and 106ff. but it sounds like you guys are recommending the SIP first and then use 106ff.. orange pads for both polishes?

BTW, after looking closer at the Costco $28 buffer..I am not going to use it after all...mine as well use a real machine to do the job correctly.

I have both a Flex and a PC. The Flex IMO is the best one out there. Pricey but you get what you pay for. Look for the sale price when you buy. The PC is a good alternative you can pick one up in a kit with alot of needed accesories fairly reasonable and like you have already read they are worth every penny.
