A Black thrashed 911 Turbo. With the exception of a few areas on the bonnet (down the center) that read mid 4`s, all Aluminum panels read scary low to me. Low to high 3`s. The rear quarter panels are mid to high 4`s. I`ve seen similar readings on other 911`s and I`m just not sure how to approach correction - do I have 2 Mils of clear on a 3.6 reading?

    TIA

I do not think you have anywhere close to 2 mils of clear on a Porsche but who really knows exactly? Maybe someone who has worked through it or otherwise knows can chime in.

In my experience, Porsche paint tends to be on the finer side. Those readings are typical.

    Thanks Jean-Claude.

It`s what I`m coming to believe having worked just a handful of Porsches.

I also switched my ETG from Mils to Microns `cause the readings are so scary thin I`m not going anywhere near aggressive.

And thanks to TDK for suggesting an infrared thermometer a while ago. I was monitoring the rear quarterpanel when all of a sudden it went from 89F to 101F! Opti MF and D300. And this happens on other areas as well.

101f is nothing. Body paint can get 160f+ in direct sunlight in the summer.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Was fortunate enough to get an infected tooth that blew my jaw up to the size of a grapefruit. Root Canal next week. So the work on the 911 is on hold.

But as far as paint temps, see Ron`s post here:

There`s a big difference in heat from sunlight and heat from a polisher. The heat from the sun is radiant and heat from the polisher is from friction. Think about the sunlight on your skin on a hot day, then think about what it feels like when someone gave you an indian burn when you were a kid. I hope some of that makes sense, it`s late, I need to go to bed.`

I agree. But he`s talking about 101f. I work from the viewpoint that if you can feel a slight bit of warmth (seeing as we are about 98.6f) I am good. If it starts getting anywhere close to hot it`s too hot imo.
