I have an old porter cable 7401 with a polishing and a wool pad (7" hook and loop wrap around) that I have from my Marine Detailing days. It weighs about 10 pounds and ranges from 1500 to 2000 rpm. Should i give it a shot in leiu of buying a hitachi/makita?

This thing is a beast i used to polish yellowed 30 footers in an afterternoon with it.

If you like that style of polisher, the Makita equivalent(I forget the part number) is less than half the weight at 4.x lbs; otherwise, use what you are comfortable with.

I just got one of these from a friend as a loaner. I`ll be trying it out this weekend.
