How do paint gauges work on repainted cars? My brand new Rabbit(Golf) got rear ended and I was going to order a paint gauge but won`t the additional paint layers of the blended/repainted area give me a false reading?

Most paint thickness gauges work by sensing the distance between the sensor and the metal base material. That’s the total distance, which would be the thickness of all layers, primer, base, clear, old coats that were sprayed over, etc. You have to take an "educated guess" as to how much is in each layer.



Some of these work only on ferrous metals (steel, iron), some on non-ferrous (aluminum, brass, etc) and others work on both. But you still need to have a metal panel and they only give you combined thickness.



xtrememike;`s gauge uses an ultrasonic echo technique which tells you how many layers are there and the thickness of each. This is a wonderful thing but they cost waaaaay more than the typical thickness gauge.

I`m sorry I can`t seem to find how much this thing is going for. Could you post or PM me how much it set you back, and if it is the cheapest model that will read carbon fiber panels.

The positector 200 is a new addition to the company, I sure wiish they had them when I PURCHASED MY model 6000 ferrious & none ferrious coating guage. With more plastic introduced into the body of automobiles this new measuring unite looks like the Bentley of guages to have especially if you buff cars with a rotory polisher.



Price if you have to ask you need to raise you prices.

In the U.S., the Gardner Co. (guardco.com) 1600pg catalog has about every industrial instrument known/needed. The `film thickness` section is 60pgs. For us-types there`s a $99 "Crash Check" ...I suspect would be useful at the pay-by-week used car lot ...all the way to a $4k ultrasonic w/memory. I thought having a new toy would be interesting, but it looks like you`d have to spend about $1k for something with decent accuracy: 1-3%. So no new toys for me at the moment.
