I was at a woodworking show this past weekend, and stopped by the 3m booth. They had a backing plate that they were using that was flexible but also had a softer face (more "cushion"). The selling point was that it conformed to uneven surfaces better.

From 3m site: "... Pad is made with a soft density foam for better conformability and allows the disc to flex which gives longer abrasive life in loading applications...."

    Has anyone tried these?

(edit: can`t seem to get picture to show...)

If you want the Rolls Royce of PC backing plates, the 6" flexible one that exceldetail.com sells is it.
