Leather steering wheel in need of serious help

2015 focus st. Leather, heated, flat bottom wheel.

At least 60k miles worth of grime and neglect to this wheel from previous owner. I hit it with steam which seemed to break down the grime well but the leather appears melted and peeled in areas. To me, I need a new wheel, (or reupholstered wheel) however I’ve seen some magic out of guys knowing what they are doing with leather. Thoughts?

In my experiences with hundreds of leather covered wheels in mostly German cars, that leather is a very thin piece of a more delicate slice of the hide.. I only carefully, with little pressure, wipe them with a proven leather liquid cleaner and a soft cloth, stopping often to examine the microfiber cloth to see what is being removed..
That being said, did your steamer melt this cover? I have a great steamer but would never consider using high heat on leather that delicate and thin..
I know of no process that is going to make that leather be normal again if it is melted and peeling..
Perhaps see if they offer a replacement sew up cover for it??
In the 70`s they used to sell really nice leather steering wheel covers that one could purchase and sew up on a steering wheel that turned out really nice..
    Good luck with this..

You can use tapatalk to upload photos easily form your phone. Perhaps reach out to colourlock. They have some videos on the rag company`s youtube channel about restoring the condition of a steering wheel.
