How about a Lexus IS. If you want a BMW maybe look at a regular 3er either E36 or E46.

    Sport sedans to consider:
    Nissan Maxima
    Infiniti I30/35
    MB C-Class Sport
    Saab 9-3 (Viggen)
    Saab 9-5 Aero
    Audi A4 1.8T
    Ford Contour SVT
    Acura and Honda as mentioned
    Volvo 850R

    Check prices using:
    Edmunds.com
    Kelley Blue Book or
    NADA

Also, remember as stated Euros will expensive to repair. I do not have much experience with Japanese cars to say if they will be expensive to repair.

My IS is going in for its 14k checkup, and it`s gonna cost over $250. I think the service guy heard my gasp over the telephone because he explained that at 14k, they change the transmission and rear differential oil in addition to all of the other stuff.

I think the cost of car maintenance and repairs is increasing because newer cars have underbody cladding to decrease drag, which needs to be removed to get to certain engine parts. An oil change for my Infiniti G35 is $55 because there`s a plastic pan under the engine that has a bunch of bolts and plastic tabs holding it in place. Also, to change a headlight or parking light, the front inner fender needs to be removed to access the back of the housing. No longer a 15 minute job.

Isn`t a significant part of that cost the oil? I heard Porsches run synthetic and need like a billion quarts of oil (well maybe not that much) because they have a dry oil sump system.

BTW - how often do you need to change the oil? I heard BMWs are at 10k, Mercedes Benz is at 13k, and Lexus is at 7.5k. Infiniti is at a low 3.5k.

Did you have other work done?

The higher cost of normal maintence does not surprise me, becuse of how little space there is in the engine bay and the overall design layout.

The oil change and topping of fluids was over $200. $70 of that was for 10 quarts of oil. Labor was over $100. I had a couple other things done, but they were covered for free under warranty. The car is a low mileage garage queen. We`ve only put on about 2.5k since the last oil change 12 months ago.

Woob is partially correct. I retired at a fairly young age and now spend part of my free time playing (I mean helping) at Poorboy`s World. My dear husband is still slaving away in the workforce to help finance my detailing hobby.

Edit: Before I retired, I was an Information Technology Project Manager specializing in Software Development.

No, I`m a volunteer. But, I do get to be the first one to play with all the new products. For a detailing junkie, that`s better than money!
