I worked for a large Pharma company for 5 years before getting laid off and we used to print pay stubs for employees. I happened to catch what the CEO made. $23,000 +take home a week. On top of that stock options, yearly bonus, private chef, full kitchen and full bath with a jacuzzi, company limo and driver 24/7 access and private jet.
If that is not excessive then we live in a messed up country.

What`s really sad is IF this happens people starting off at Mcdonalds, BK, Taco Bell etc. will get paid considerably more than a single E-1, E-2 & E-3 who has just enlisted in the military...

And where, pray tell, do they think the extra wages are going to come from ? Do they still believe that the Bank "Gives" you money everytime you go there and put the card into the reader??

Did they miss that part of the Econ class in High School ?? Did they go to High School ?

I can tell you that when I was young enough to even qualify for minimum wage, it was just a little over $2.00/hour, and guess what - no one was protesting/demonstrating/hating/etc...

I just put my head down, (as well as everyone else), worked hard, learned much, worked harder, studied hard, figured out ways to make the job easier by becoming more efficient (innovation), was never late, never tired after the weekend, and demonstrated leadership,, honesty, and integrity...

In time, my superiors recognized this and we were promoted and given more responsibility...

Wouldnt it be nice someday to see stories of people who came up with virtually nothing, and worked hard without complaining, whining, and basically being jack a$$, got an education along the way, and then saw themselves promoted - because of their good hard work - into very high levels of business ???

How come we dont ever see those stories ???

Instead we have to see people sitting on the ground holding signs, and chanting something about GIVING them something they have not EARNED....

OK, I need to go outside now and kick the trashcan or something...

You must be a youngster. It was $.75 when I started working - and I didn`t get it. I was paid $.50/hr. (I was pretty young, though...)

The last time we had a good economy and everyone was making a good wage was under Clinton. Eventually it`s going to be poor and rich no middle class.
Right now my family is in desperate need. My wife got laid off from her job and got her 3rd back surgery so she was on unemployment disability. She got sick and was in the hospital and blew another disc. She is due for her 4th back surgery at the end of this month. Unemployment disability is gone. She now can collect her regular unemployment and she has been on the phone 3 hours a day trying to get through to open her claim. This has been going on for a week +. I`m looking for a PT job ( btw if anyone needs help around the shop no job is beneath me and I will take NJ state minimum wage. I live in West Deptford.)
Her surgeon basically told my wife she will never be able to work again because the discs in her back and neck are just going to keep blowing over time. Based on her MRI he said the disc above the current blown disc has maybe a year max before it goes. He said probably buy the time she is 50 she will have had more then half her back fused and that is taking it easy. She got it from her Dad. His first surgery for it was at age 65. My wife is having her 4th at age 38. So we started the process for permanent disability and we all know what that is going to take.
We are doing everything we can to stay a float sold a car I make too much money for state assistance but my daughter is not going to school in $100 sneakers.
So we are hoping to get reduced lunch application approved at school so lunch for our daughter is 40 cents a day. Right now she brown bags it but a 40 cent lunch will be cheaper then anything we make for her at home for the week.
There are people that need some REAL help every now and then and people that milk the system for every dime they can so they can go to fast food joint make minimum wage get state and federal assistance to buy $100 sneakers for a 5 year old and sit at home and play Xbox all night.
Yes people need to get off there buts and work hard. I`m out looking but my wife can`t work. Even if she worked from home PT her perm disability claim will be closed. Half the time she cannot even get out of bed because of the pain.
There are people who need help out there. Like my family and others who are having a hard time. And then there are leaches on the system and it needs to stop so the people who need a little help can get it until they do not need it anymore.
Honest hardworking people who fall on tough times don`t like to ask for help heck we hate it. Sometimes we need it. They will also work their butts off to get out of needing help.

I am truly sorry for your situation, it`s gotta be tough.

Every job is important. That said, responsibility is the differentiating point here. The ceo, is responsible for millions of dollars in and millions of dollars out. As well as responsible to the stock holders, employees and patients/recipiants of the meds the company produces.

If you want more, work for it. There are plenty of jobs an nepotism to go around. If you cant find a job, you need to work on your social skills first.

My family came from nothing, they never complained. As my grand father used to say, quit whining and just do it. Excuses are for those who have no mental backbone.

But we must be more sensitive to those without the mental backbone. Just like giving every kid in softball (insert sport of choice) a trophy. They`re all winners.

But I tried my best............................ (insert quote from movie "The Rock)

lol, my dad used to make me throw away anything that wasn`t third place or better. It didn`t make much sense to me as a young child, but later on I realized what he was trying to do.

Basic flow chart that society as a whole seems to have forgotten about (or at least a largely growing cohort has)

    Competition -> Innovation -> Achievement
*implicit in here lies no sense of entitlement, just work ethic and the will to better ones self.

Innovation can also be by means of deviant behavior (Robert K. Merton) such as selling drugs, other crime, etc. A lot of people chose this route due to whatever reason they want to claim. Maybe they got tired of minimum wage (or felt they were above a `remedial` job) and didn`t have the drive to better themselves through hard work, and chose the easy way out, who knows.

So yea there is this whole idea of Life Chances (Max Weber) , but still, anyone has the opportunity to at least improve their situation if they want it badly enough.

You can make an excuse for Anything, just listen to a politician speak, or think of that friend everyone probbly has that`s always complaining about everything and making excuses for his/her misfortunes. You know we all have at least one. But who has the friend who finally stopped complaining, making excuses, and got off their butt and did something to make their lives better...because if you have had that friend, I`d bet you enjoyed seeing that change.

Anyways, I am not against someone making 15/hr for flipping burgers or whatever, but they had better be dang good at doing that job. I guess I`m just too much of a structural functionalist at heart and feel that task specialization is a very overlooked aspect of an industrially advanced nation/society. Should it be the minimum, HECK NO! I would even argue that a standardized minimum wage is unfair and those workers who perform poorly should potentially be paid less.

I really think the people who are protesting for this increased minimum wage should divert that energy towards a more productive protest (granted they could idealize such a different protest). I was given a whole lot growing up, didn`t appreciate any of it. I didn`t start to appreciate anything until I had to work my butt off to keep it or earn it. So maybe at 30 I`m `old school`, but I`d like to think that`s how it should be.

Entitlement is the killer of all things productive.

as someone already said (and I really liked)
    We are all doomed.

    End Rant

Such as? Wait, so you don`t believe our country has a growing wealth inequality problem? You`d also rather keep forking taxes over to low-wage earners, rather than insisting that perhaps something be done to "help encourage" employers pay them a wage they can afford?
