    I have a virus.

    So I have this virus...

About 20 minutes ago everything "crashed" and only a few things work now. My desktop was erased as well as access to any directories. These fake warnings keep popping up, as well as a poorly recreated control panel. I have Avast! running a full scan right now, but I would like to get Malware Bytes and Spybot working on this as well.

I was wondering if there is a way to access the drive through a command prompt or hotkey? I dunno, I`m not all that tech savvy.

I suppose I could just re-download the software onto an external drive and run it off that, assuming I can open it.

    Help?

It also won`t let me open the task manager, so I can`t shut down any background processes.

    (Windows 7 OS, BTW)

EDIT: Here is what I have, and this link goes step by step on how to fix it.

I have a couple of photos of my screen that I posted to Facebook from my phone, I`ll see if I can link to them... can you guys see the pictures?

This is why I believe it to be fake. Everything `solution` that Windows offers requires me to hand over my CC info. Not to mention the grammatical errors and counterproductive descriptions of the issues.

Can you go into safe mode and run your anti virus program? That is indeed a bogus scareware program. Malwarebytes (free) will remove it if you have it.

I think so. That`s what I`m going to try now. I have Malware Bytes on my computer, but I can`t get at it. I managed to open Avast! before it cut off access. I`ll do a boot scan and see where that gets me.

Use another computer to download and install a portable virus scanner/remover on a thumb drive.

Start in Safe Mode and proceed.

I feel stupid for not putting Malware Bytes on my thumb drive, I already had to deal with a different scareware virus earlier this year...

You can also try navigating to TASK MANAGER via: C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe

I had the same virus and eventually had to pull the hard drive and slave it to another computer using a USB 2.0 IDE/SATA Adapter. I then ran both Malwarebytes and Superantispyware to get rid of it.

The good news....all your files and folders are still there. The visus has changed them all to "Hidden" status.

Those photos of the scan showing critical problems is part of the virus. Ignore

Eggzactly... been there, done that. I now keep Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware on a flash drive along with a few other utilities. Life used to be so easy with a DOS bootable emergency disk...

    Re: I have a virus.

Another way is to log off and log back in a different account. You probably are running in the administrator acount and will either have to create a new one or just sign back on in the guest account. Once you are there then the programs are also in that account then you can run them to clean it out. I also use superanti spyware and had to do just this a few weeks ago on the kids laptop. Once you have run it as a guest or what ever you crate then log back off and log back in as usual.

I had a similar virus, started in safe mode, ran Malware Bytes (from safe mode), problem solved. Best of luck Connor!

How did you get the virus? Was it attached to an email or due to visiting a web site?

Sorry to hear that Conner. I hope you get it cleared up. Computer virus are so frustrating. We recently had one on a computer at our office. It took days for the IT staff to clear it.
