So I had a little crack in my iphone 3g screen and decided to buy one of those screen replacement kits. Yesterday I followed the directions to the T after watching youtube videos and some PDA website videos. After I got it all back together I discovered the phone had turned itself back on while I was working on it. The touch screen didn`t respond. I took it apart and reconnected the connectors. The screen is now all white and when you squeeze the phone you get little bits of icons in rainbow colors on the screen. So I`ve thrown that out.

So my question is as follows. Does anyone have experience with buying an iphone 4 and doing a "jailbreak" and "unlock" so that it can be used on their carrier? I figure this is my best option. I can buy a used one for $350. I`d rather pay that and figure out the jailbreak and unlock thing myself, considering my cell company wants $650 for one.

I have done it for a friend. Not to hard if you follow the directions. Easier answer, go with a Droid.

Sounds good I guess I`ll give it a shot. I`ve never even seen a Droid lol, everyone around here has an iPhone. There are almost 20 of them for sale within a few minutes drive. Maybe that`s not a good thing! How do you like the Droid compared with the iPhone?

    Lets see. Droid Advantages:

    1. No restrictions transferring data between phone and computer. (Acts like a USB Device. iphones require you to use itunes)

    2. No itunes. Can transfer any downloaded music from multiple sources.

    3. Alot more free apps

    4. In most cases you dont have to jailbrake a droid. (Unless you want a custom rom or OS)

    5. Its a mostly open system instead of Apple`s closed system.

    6. Options for all price levels (New droids cost $150-$500.)

    6. Dont have to use an itunes type store to get apps. (Droid has its own store, but you dont have to use it. Can go direct or use alternative stores)

    7. Does not have iphone restrictions of downloading videos in its browser.

    8. Did I mention Steve Jobs wont make a dime if you get a iphone?

    9. The Droid store does not restrict applications in their store unless they are malicious.

    10. It makes this cool *DROID* sound when you get a text message. Unless you change it of course.

    11. Allows you to tweak alot more settings on the phone. Iphone does it for you weather you like it or not.

    12. Like the droid menus and interface better.

    13. Adobe FLASH!

Could list alot more if I though about it for a minute. :biggrin1:

Nice list! I have never plugged my iPhone into my computer and used iTunes without cursing the crap out of my phone because it`s such a ridiculous process to go through if you just want to add 10 songs or so from a new cd. The 2 hours that it takes to back itself up and transfer all the apps back and fourth every time just kills me lol. I`ll have to check out the Droid selection around town here.

I`m a total tech junkie, I`ve gone through more phones than I care to mention, including Google`s own Nexus One. The first phone that has made it past 6 months is my iPhone. Everything else has just left me frustrated with half baked apps and features as well as poor integrations. That said, I could not live without jailbreaking. Once you jailbreak, the only advantage Android has is Google Navigation, though I hear MotionX is a great nav app.

Back to the OP`s request, its pretty darn easy now as long as the the phone is at 4.3.3, just got to Directory listing for / you don`t even need a computer. 4.3.4 has closed the common way to jailbreak, but I`m sure that will be resolved soon enough.

Sounds like quite an expensive habit if you have to pay full price for updating to another phone because you didn`t like the one you signed up with. I would do the same, and would love to have multiple phones to suit my fancy, but AFAIK the carrier will probably charge full price for the new phone, probably try to get me to switch to another, restricting plans, and all kinds of complications. It`s not something I know much about. How do you do it?

I end up selling the phones on ebay. For example, the Nexus one I paid $200 for. The ETF was $200 I think. I ended up selling the phone and accessories for $430ish. So I lost on the accessories, probably $100 in the hole. Same for all the other phones, going rate on ebay seems to be about $100 on top of what the new contract price is for a phone, assuming the phone is in perfect condition.

if the screen is showing white when you were doing the repair you were not careful enough and must have cracked the screen. You can try reassembling and doing a reset to see if that helps.

Droid is ok but coming from an iphone you will hate how bad some of the apps are written and how the email program is a joke compared to ios. My only problem with android is the bloatware software from the carrier and how the updates take centurys to be released.

I was playing around with it after and I definitely cracked the screen the second time I took it apart. When I pulled it apart with the suction cup it all came apart wrong and it was a mess to straighten that out. It was after this point that the screen was white. Anyway I found the last connector wasn`t staying in properly. So I stuck a folded piece of tape on the connector, so that it would be forced down into place when I closed it all up. This made it possible to just barely be able to read and write texts, and answer the phone, but it eventually wore in and wasn`t working anymore so the phone became a brick.

I looked over the droid phones and I found that I didn`t really like the way they try to cram all kinds of information into one place. There is a flash program on their site that allows you to preview the OS of the phones. I`m afraid I`m stuck in the "one thing at a time" mentality of the iPhone, which suits my mind better anyway lol.

My iPhone was also the only phone that lasted me a significant amount of time. I`ve payed full price for quite a few phones! Most of the phones broke, but the ones that broke were usually broken because I didn`t really care for them anymore and wasn`t treating them very nicely.

I contacted a local person in my area that does hundreds of iPhone repairs and jailbreaking and he said that unlocking an iPhone 4 was a pain in the a$$. He said he will do some iPhone 4s but not others. This coming from a guy who does this for money, I second guessed my method of acquiring a new phone. After two days, none of the 15 or so people I contacted on my local classified listing got back to me about their iPhones for sale so I decided to just call up my cell company, Fido, and get a grand total for a new phone.

I called Fido tonight and the fellow said it was $560ish to buy it outright but he said that even though my contract isn`t up for another year and some, that I could just extend my agreement by 3 years and get a new iPhone 4 for $160. Also my "Fido dollars " that have built up in my account to about $90 can go towards that price. So now I`ve got a brand new phone on the way for $70. That`s more like it! The guy at Fido I talked to a few days ago made NO MENTION of this being an option and just sat there on the other end of the line telling me I had to buy a phone outright...

I have no problem signing up for another 3 years with Fido. After being with a few companies over the years they seem to be the best for me, even though they have no local stores in my area, just online and over the phone. They send you your phone in the mail. Also I dated a girl who worked for Fido and she set me up with a few options for a sweet price. One of them being a 6gb data plan for $10/month. I`m just hoping they don`t look at that and say "hey ***? why`s this guy got so many discounts?" lol.
