    Single vs. Married??

    Hi all,

My co-worker and I were eating lunch. He is 26yrs and I am 28yrs and we were talking about marriage and whether or not it is a good time to settle down.

I told him that I am 28yrs and I am one of those guys who likes to have fun, including traveling the world before I get married, im just not ready yet. My co-worker went on to say that 60% of married americans here in the US are divorced...........I don`t know if this is accurate. yada yada yada he said:

"You can be single and lonely or married and miserable!!"

What do you guys think of this phrase?

    Re: Single vs. Married??

That sounds like the advice of a divorced person. That is like taking advice about flying from someone who gets air sick. I`ve been married nine years and I love it. If you try and live like you are single when you are married then I can promise you that you`ll be miserable. There is way too much selfishness in this world and that is one of the main reasons for the divorce rate. Every fight I`ve had with my wife is because I am a selfish prick. It could have lead to divorce if we both weren`t willing to make changes to make the marriage work. We were even married for three or four years before we had kids to make sure it was going to take. The most miserable of the married people are the ones who got married BECAUSE they had kids. Everybody does it backwards these days....

The way I did it (since I am a selfish person) is I made a list of everything I wanted to accomplish before I got married. Then I made a list of everything I wanted to do before we had kids. There are only so many things you can responsibly do in different phases of your development. When my kids are young there are only so many opportunities to do things that will stay with them their entire life. I don`t like missing opportunities.

My wife and I both worked for Delta Airlines, so we got the travel bug out of our system pretty easily. I can honestly say I have been everywhere in the world that I have ever wanted to go. It isn`t really that long of a list because after visiting half of them I decided that I didn`t want to see the other ones that bad really. lol When I was single I spent all my money on my computers and entertainment center and my car. You can`t get away with putting ten thousand dollars in a fifteen thousand dollar car when you are married unless you make lots and lots of money. You wife has to be really supportive too. I sold the car a couple years after we got married and I haven`t regretted it. The whole point is to live your life with no regrets. Don`t do it if you are going to regret it. If it still has to be done then you need to do it without regretting it because you know you are doing it for the right reasons.

Again, the divorce rate is so high because people are selfish. They don`t want to let go of their single lifestyle to merge with another. Marriage is about being selfless and is about doing things for someone else for a change. As long as you are going to keep seperate bank accounts and keep secrets from your spouse, you can guarantee yourself a marriage that is not as happy and fullfilling as it could be. It is about more than sex and splitting the rent. Marriage is supposed to be about sharing your life with someone you care about more than yourself. Selfishness has no place in a successful marriage.

It`s been a long time, but I sure wasn`t lonely when I was single and I`m sure not miserable when I`m married.

    I hope you make it

I can see how marriage could be bad if things did not work out but if I had it to do over I would do it again just as long as I can have the same woman. I have NO regrets
