    Gasing Up and Smoking...WHAT!

This morning the wife`s car was low on gas...don`t ask...anyway I decided to go fill it up, before she leaves....I`m at the local station and this very young girl in the isle over from me is standing there smoking a cigarette while filling up the car

I yelled over to her....you really think that`s safe?

its OK she says I do it all the time.

I said you ever read the warning signs above your head?

Looks up and keeps pumping and puffing

I closed up my car and drove away within seconds....didn`t want to see a young girl flame on

In my old country, when I trained to become a paramedic, we had a demonstration at the fire deptment about combustive fumes. I wish she would have seen that! Some people just don`t believe before the see it with their own eyes.

My father was a farmer...I was around gas and diesel most all the time....I learned about how explosive gas is then...something that I have never forgot

As I drove back I kept listening for the explosion

I`ve done enough relatively unintelligent things in my life to know that fire(or a heat source) + gasoline = fire. Gas fires are really hard to put out too. I would have said a little bit more to her, but I would have left quickly also.

I said what I felt...but rather than stand there trying to prove that I was right...then get blown up with her....I decide to just leave....if she is that stupid I don`t want to be around her

I would have only said what I felt as well. It would have just been a little longer and more colorful.

I would have told her that though she does it all of the time, it isn`t her life I`m worried about.

If she was very young (16-18) it probably wouldn`t have mattered what you said. Most teenagers at that age have hard time taking advice (I speak from experience as an advisor for troubled kids). If you are above 25 you are practically an "old fart" to them who has no clue about anything.
Note: not all teenagers are that way. my son, for example, when he grows up to be that certain age, will be a mature young man, who listens to his father`s every word, and when I give him an advice, he will listen attentively and follow it to the letter.

Yup - the best way of teaching and learning - by example and experience.

I did the same thing that my Dad did for me...took a small amount..1 oz...poured that on a small board.....threw a match at it while I explained that it would ignite before the match hit the liquid....the flame shoots up quickly and burns out in seconds.... then I hit that with some water...it was a lesson that I wanted to make sure he understood...he is mowing the lawn now....and when its time to put gas in the tank that he makes sure that to use the funnel so that gas is not all over the mower...of which gets hot right away

I wish someone would have done that with a lot of things for me. My parents were strictly "Don`t do it because I said not to." parents. I learned how flammable gas was first hand when a few of us decided to have a tennis match with flaming tennis balls. No, it certainly wasn`t the smartest thing I`ve ever done. It was so much fun though. Luckily, no one got hurt.
