Yep...black rat snake, we get them from time to time. Startling when ya dont notice it and catch it out of the corner of your eye.
They`re constrictors, non-poisonous and actually kinda beneficial to have around, pest-wise.
We have one who winters in cabinet of pool heater, usually takes off on his own when we get ready to fire it up each Spring.
Who knows, maybe same guy.

Lol!
BudgetPlan1- Hey, cool! thanks for sharing that. My wife and I are big fans of beneficial snakes
We never get Rat Snakes though, only Garters, which we occasionally have to grab and relocate when they get into the garages. Also have to check our overhead doors so we don`t run over them, the sun-warmed doors seem to appeal to them.
2 years ago we saw the tail of a 1 foot black snake slither outta the hallway and into a spare bedroom. Tore the room apart and could not find snake, a bit disconcerting to my wife. Found it scooting across the kitchen floor about a month later and grabbed it to put it back outside. Kinda curious what it was eating for that month.
We also have some bats that fly around at night over the pool. Few weeks ago some folks were over, bat came swooping down and buzzed within a foot of one persons head at the table. Was kinda a "Did that just really happen?" type of thing.
A while back we developed a mole problem in our yard. We had just gotten to the point where we were about ready to call in Bill Murray and then a black rat snake like the one in your picture showed up. The mole problem just sort of disappeared after that. I startled that one once and it actually "jumped" (launched itself?) onto the lowest branch of a tree in the back yard and then slithered its way all the way to the top.

BudgetPlan1- Heh heh, hey that`s great about the Black Snake! Yeah, wonder what it *was* eating all that time!
We simply *love* bats since they eat mosquitoes, but I`d sure hate to run into a rabid one.
Living in the woods as we do, it`s good that we`re OK with the Backyard Wildlife not always staying in the back yard Even the dogs are pretty onboard with peaceful coexistence, though they can get revved up when a chipmunk gets in the house.

Liz@Autopia- Hey, that was a swell solution to your mole problem! Heh heh, sounds like it was more scared of *you* than the other way around!
